Crazy water pump failure

My water pump bearing failed, melted and heated up the shaft enough to twist off the pulley. Didn't leak a drop of coolant before or after the failure or give any sign there was a problem. Did tear up the belt and bend the tensioner but that's it .Happen on 95 in GA traveling from NJ to FL with 2k lbs in the bed and loaded 10K trailer. I was able to get a tow to an empty lot at the next exit and get the parts and fix there. This one one hell of a roadside task LOL. Lost about 8 hrs but did complete the last 4hrs of the trip with no problems. I never saw one fail like this so i wanted to share.

The truck is a 2010 and the water pump was changed about 30k mikes ago. truck has 106k on it.
the recall was for 13 and later i think. not sure if its the same kind of failure but it surely could have caused a fire.

Yeah, water pump recall was for later models.
Mine waited until about 400K to crap out.
You lucked out, could have been lots worse when that bearing froze up and that pulley came off.

FYI--the OEM Concentric pumps that were recalled had NO weep hole and were also prone to catastrophic failure.

Looks like you were more than up for the disruption in the trip. That would be a nasty one with a hot engine.

Many folks don't know where or what South of the Border is. We drive by it but never pulled in.

It has no weep hole just the weep hole in the back. Looks like i got a bad pump from dodge. Great!. Has a OReilly special on it now with a Lifetime Waranty. LOL

I drive by it all the time. I usually layover there in Lumberton so i can get some snacks and beer going north and grab a photo shot for the family before i stop.
It was hot. got a real nasty burn and that tensioner is a real PITA with the fan and shroud installed. If i had a fan wrench this would have been so easy but just had my little
emergency tool kit but it got it done.

i got the gates tensioner kit and whatever brand pump Oreilly had.

Hopefully that pump lasts, but usually lifetime warranty means you’ll be replacing it for life.
