Cummins in 2wd F-150

Crew Cab conversionn questions...

I have found a 1981 or 82 crew cab truck for sale... 1500 with parts truck, as well.

It was a work truck, so it needs plenty of attention, but I have questions...

1. It's a manual - 4 speed. Will the getrag or NV4500 fit? What about mounts and crossmembers, etc?

2. What about drivelines? I have a differential with the right gears... Is the driveline itself dramatically different?

3. Has anyone put in a P7100 equipped engine? Does it fit?

4. What parts do you need off the donor truck? I'm looking to go intercooled for sure. Core support? What about engine mounts and crossmember? Do I need to replace the front suspension?

5. What did you do for added noise suppression?

transmission all I had to do on the nv was put about a 4inch block on the mount and move it back about 2 inch. did not modifiey the cross member

I am running the dana 60's that came in the 83 you will want to move up to the 1450 yoke on the rear

I have the inline pump setting in the lil red cummins express if you do get an Inline pump motor (94-98) you will hve to get the mounts and mount rubbers off of a first gen truck

you can just modifiy your core support all you have to do is cut the radiator mount extions off the core support and buy the mounts for the 92-93 cross flow radiator you can still get the fan shroud from dodge for arund $20 but they are not making any more when the supply is gone there going

my front small block leave springs lasted 2 weeks till they were on ther rubbers went witha 4 inch lift for gas truck and it leved outhe truck

one inch insulation form jc whitney on the floor its quiter than most stock first gens

Good luck you will love the truck when its done you can see picks of mine at www.geocities.com/blown72rr George

Gee George, you didn't leave me anything to add;)

Biggest problem you will run into is the you are going to have to move the bulk head/firewall wiring block on the crew cab, the clutch master cyc. goes right thru there, so taking measurments off a 1st gen (89-93) Cummins truck and a standard shift gasser is REAL important. I took a piece of paper, taped it over the holes in the firewall, I used the bolt holes for the steering column and brake booster for a refference(they are the same in all the 1st gens (81-93) . And then cut out the holes in the paper making a template. Then transfer that to your crew cab, you will have to do a little mig welding, which is no big deal. Don't forget to grab the clutch master Cyc. frame work that bolts to the steering column support under the dash( and take measurments on how far it is from the inside of the firewall). I found that removing the dash completely is the easist, but you have to have the windshield out to do it. You will also need to buy or borrow a 90 degree adapter for your drill, You will need this to drill the holes for the clutch master cyc. frame assy.

I used the stock automatic trans mount under the NV4500 with three inch channel for a cross member. The P7100 fits nicely but the cooler is a tight squeeze.

I built my motor mounts and used two 440 pickup insulators on each side mounted in the stock cross member holes.

I have Skyjacker D100C-S under the front. The stock 440 springs would not hold it up good enough.

As for noise suppression, I am still working on that.

You got pics???????????

you can just modifiy your core support all you have to do is cut the radiator mount extions off the core support and buy the mounts for the 92-93 cross flow radiator you can still get the fan shroud from dodge for arund $20 but they are not making any more when the supply is gone there going

83 Crew Cab, you got any pics of this? I have a good 85 core support I could do this to if it works... ..... Thanks

this is not a real good pic but the angles that the gas radiator mounts to just cut off flush with the core support the opening in the support is the same size the brace that runs thourgh the middle of the opening cut down to about 1/4 inch thick for the bottom mounts I used 3/4 or 1 inch ( forget witch) pipe caps with a hole dilled in them to mont them to the support the rubber bussing fits in them perfect then I got the factory top mounts let me no if I can help any more or if I did not explane this good #ad

That's cool.....

I wanted to keep the stock grill in mine, too. Guess I'll have to tear mine back apart, now. Thanks for the info.

You haven't noticed any cracks where you had to cut it?

And is that an OEM aftercooler or an aftermarket? What about the A/C condensor? Did you put that back in, too?

OOPS, edit again. I see you have no A/C. Is there room for it?
