Like any cruise control, its supposed to deactivate when you barely tap the brakes. Mine does not. You actually have to push down to where you feel the brakes grabbing pretty good to deactivate... which is hard on everything. I also notice the brake lights do not come on until until I reach this brakeing point. Is the cruise tied into the brake light circuit... ie: when the lights come on the cruise is killed. If so maybe a simple switch adjustment or replacement is in order.

There is a adjustment on the 97s, dont know on the newer ones but there should be. Its a real strange setup that you need the shop manual to figure out. Hopefully someone has the text available to publish here. I am sure that is what your problem is.

brake light switch

there is a simple adjustment for the switch ,for the life of me i cant remember what it is. i dont have my manual handy. someone will chime in with the answer. good luck with it.

Yes, they are tied into the same circuit (at least they are on my '94). To "adjust" the switch, push down on the brake pedal and pull the plunger that contacts the brake pedal arm out. Release the brake pedal and the plunger will ratchet in.

Bear in mind that this will usually cure the opposite problem of the brake lights flashing and the cruise dropping out. If this affects the operation you describe, try pushing it in to get it to a point that works (full out is the FSM setting). If it doesn't affect it, the switch might be bad or there may be another component causing problems.

My 02 has the same problem. Every time I talk to the dealership about it, they just look at me like I'm retarded...

I'll be droping the truck off over Laborday and I hope they can get it fixed then. Its kind of annoying to have to slam on the brakes just to get the cruise disconnected. I don't want to shut it off and have to re-program it to the speed I wanted it at.
