Mine did this several years ago. The cruise control wouldn't work and neither would the dash control for the heater or air.
Someone on here replied to my post for help, telling me to check a vacuum hose under the injector pump that may have come off. It had and was an easy fix. I had apparently pulled it off when I changed the fuel filter.
In my 97 dually I modified the stock plate and made it bigger and in the process I think I messed up something in maybe the govener spring or something so now whenever I turn the cruise control on it goes like hell all the way to 80 then kicks back then goes to 80 and kicks back and so on although when I have the truck out of cruise control she goes well passed 90. I think my problem might have been my error.
Also check the vacuum line that runs from the 'T' at the firewall and goes to the servo unit under the drivers battery tray, mine had a hole in it from rubbing against the inter cooler pipe, wore through that black mesh stuff and through the vacuum line ... . $7. 70 into the local dealerships pocket and 5 mins to rip out the old and in with the new ... problem solved.
By the sound of Az's post - it sounds like it won't "turn on" - being an elec problem maybe?
I had this aboot 6 weeks ago aboot 10 hrs from home. It was fine right up untill we stopped to get something to eat. Musta shut the truck off as I remember that I had to turn the CC back on once on the freeway. The Cruise light flashed and went back off. I played with it a bit and it did try a tad and then not.
I pulled over to check fuses and found none related to the C/C.
Got in and drove home using the hoof.
Next day I tried it and it worked fine and has been fine ever since. (Well as fine as the junky C/C works on these anyhow. That is something that I need to see aboot updating before fall.
I had that problem with my 99 when I first got it. It was a bad brake light switch. Dealer replaced and had a bad time tring to adjust it, (like I said the dealer) but after they got it right, it has worked for over 100k.
