Have a 98. 5 24V and just recently started having problems with cruise control. When set it initially and take foot off accelator, the engine keeps on accelerating. Need to take cruise off and on for about 10 time before it will finally hold the desired speed. Truck just out of warranty and do want to play the 'easter egg' routine with the dealer. Manual does say, paraphrase here, that cruise will develop a 'memory' and need to cycle it on/off to clear 'memory'. Help!

Sounds like a crusie problem I had a while back. There is a TSB out on it. Took it to Dodge, they reflashed the computer and it worked fine. At least till my most recent cruise control problems - my cruise would quit working all together. The PCM went bad. This was covered under the 8/80000 emissions warranty. I would guess they would charge you for the TSB, but they shouldn't charge more than about 1/2 hour to reflash it. To me, it would be worth it. Good luck.

RMHanes, I have the same symptons with mine.
When first set cruise, it will climb about 7-8 mph from where I set it at.
Usually after I go up an incline it will increase then.
It has been that way since I had the truck [8 mos. ].
I guess I have accepted it as normal... .
So you know you're not alone here.

My truck was doing the same thing, was the cruise control servo, that was bad. Check for vacuum leaks at the control, that could be it too. zzman. it is not normal and will probably get worse. I was "working" with mine until I had time to take it in when I got out on the freeway one night and set it about 10 mph low as "usual". Long story short, I let it go past 105MPH before I shut it off. I don't think it would have stopped. Servo to fix mine was $180 or so from DC so with a little resourcefulness you should be able to fix it without going hungry. It really isn't safe, so fix it!

My dad (Jack in Alaska) had the same problem with his cruise control. The dealer reflashed it and all was well. Take it in and have it done, it just is not safe and will get worse.

I also had trouble initially with mine when truck was new. Dealer wouldn't fix it because they could not duplicate the problem. I told them it was unsafe and I was going to report it to the Highway Traffic Safety Admin. and request an investigation for a possible recall. They replaced a module and fixed it immediately.

Mine did the same thing and the cruise servo was bad. Asked the service manager if he knew of any problems with the cruise in the 99's and he gave me that look like 'yeah I do', told him it would keep accelerating until you stopped it. He ordered a new servo without looking at it.
