Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cruising rpm's

Is there a certain rpm that is the limit for cruising? I want to be able to cruise at 80 mph but that is puting my rpm's at around 2700-2800. Is that too high? my truck redlines at 3000 but I hear people saying they shift way above that. I just don't want to damage anything.







1997 2500 4x4 5-speed 4. 10's

You can run your motor right on the governor all day long if you want, you are not going to hurt a thing. The only thing that will suffer will be your milage.

Chillydog- Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting anything by running high rpm's.

I can rev my truck to 3400 no prob when I run home to texas from utah I often llok down and am cruising at 2800 or 2900... ... . i do this all the time and have never had any probs except you might get a headache from the constants screaming from the turbo or the drone of the exhaust... ... ... . DONT BE SCARED!!

Zack- Thanks. Thats what I wanted to hear. I like the extra power from the 4. 10 gears but it really raises the cruising rpm's. This is my first diesel so I am still learning.



Why does the tach redline at 3000 rpm's?

My '89 W250 CTD had a 727 (3 gear) auto with no OD. Flat out it'd run 65mph :{ . I used to run it all day with my foot on the floor, only time I'd back off was running down a steep hill (no load on motor). Not sure what it was reving at cause it didn't have a tach but I never had any probs and the milage was still around 18 mpg.

another example: when i first got the truck many many miles ago i lost 5th gear in my nv4500 and drove it in 4th Forever... ... ... . that got annoying but the motor held and never had a prob... ... ... like i said befor ethe lour turbo and exhaust gets annoying after 15-16 hrs of driving... ...
