Haven't been on the site in a while, so I'm not up to speed!!! My trusty '01 with only about 80K is acting up! Occassional "stumble" and 1693 code. Has not quit or failed to start. May need to have a pro diagnose it, if it continues or dies out :{ . Any suggestions, Thank you guys! Jim G

Man that problem sounds all too familar with the 24V's. :( Any code other then the 1693? there should be...

No other codes, only "stumbled" twice and this was shortly after a fuel filter change??? Checked all my connections and seems fine for now but I'm worried it may be the dreaded VP44 failure. Has always had gauges and all read OK??? I will keep you posted.

If you have had good fuel pressure all along maybe an APPS problem? I know Warpig on here had the exact problem,,,, and, well, now he is running a HRVP-44

If it's a VP they CAN Go with just a 1693 (Companion Code) and no others. When they do and that is the case you will notice Hard starts. Now with stumbles you can also see the 216 code along with that 1693. When you cycled the key did you wait until it returned to mileage?

Thanks for the help guys. Yes, Tim got P1693 then something like P... ... . done? Truck has always had good pressure, changed out the original pump about 2 years ago when it started faltering. I pushed it today and can draw it down to 8psi, post filter, but no further "stumbles". If i do end up needing a new injection pump... . I hope it doesn't die on my upcoming North Carolina trip... ... . who would you guys recommend for parts and labor? BTW the truck has an Edge Comp with out the injector wire tapped, it never has been tapped, Ive been waiting until after 100k, could the Comp be going out? It is about 3 years old? Thanks, Jim

How's it running now? Maybe you had air in the lines after changing fuel filter? You should of seen another code with the 1693 I would think.

Just got in from the N. C. trip. Truck ran fine till a stumble and then" dead pedal or limp mode" pulling away from a light, on the way down, in Delaware! I got it off the road and let it sit for a few minutes. Early Sat AM, no pro help available so I cleared the code (1693) and light by re starting a few times. Figured I'd run it until it quit and try to find a diesel shop or dealer along the way. This was a bit nerve wracking, especially on/in the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel!!! But no further problems all the way to N. C. Monday AM, the only Dodge dealer in the area can't check it out but sends me to a local shop with lots of diesel experience and the correct "scanner" to figure it out. After about 45 minutes of checking it and road testing, the mechanic, who did seem to know Dodges pretty well, says he thinks its the PCM, not the VP 44. He can only get a 1689 code and he was TRYING to set other codes. He also shut down each injector, 1 at a time, and this test worked to his satisfaction. His advice was to run it, since he could not get a new PCM for a few days any way, and if it stumbled again bring it in, while in "limp mode". Never missed a beat all week, I un plugged, cleaned, "greased" and reconnected all the PCM, ECM, and Comp connections. Ran it all the way home today, 13 hours non stop, comp off, not a hint of trouble. Opinions from those wiser than myself? Should I replace the PCM? Order a VP? I don't make such long road trips very often so I'm tempted to just keep running it. It is not under warranty so I don't want to just throw parts at it!! Thanks for your input, guys. Jim G

Ecm

I wouldn't replace anything yet. Maybe the cleaning of the ECM connectors did the trick. Your code is an ECM trouble code. Did you reset the accelerator pedal position sensor after disconnecting the ECM?

Did you go to the outer banks? We usually go there every summer... . Nice place.

Thanks for the replys Tim W ! Yes I did re-set the APPS after letting the truck sit over night last Sat, batteries disconnected. Don't know if that helped anything, but couldn't do much until Mon AM, anyway! And yes, we were staying for a week in S. Nags Head NC. Our 14th year of a vacation on the Outer Banks. Great beach weather, despite a near miss by the tropical storm, fishing was fair!! The only Dodge dealer on the Outer Banks does not have much of a service dept. and you see very few diesel trucks of any kind. I will keep you posted on my truck, Jim G

bring it into me at Cummins in rocky hill. we can check the codes, the chrysler codes seem to be really odd, theres a bunch of codes for nothing. at least we can check our ecm and tell you if it is or not. because the vp usually only logs one fault and thats a 368.

My VP44 died with a "sheared rotor shaft", only code on the Odometer was "p1693".

UPDATE on "1693" & limp mode

I think I've narrowed down my occassional "stumble" and code setting to my 4 year old PE Comp. Truck started missing at idle, I turned Comp off, idled normal, repeated several times. Question now is, are Comps repairable (Ive checked and "greased" all connections) or should I upgrade to a more modern controller? Any experience with Smarty or other computer "enhancements" for 2nd gen trucks? Thanks Guys.
