Hi guys,

I'm new to the TDR and new to owning a CTD so bear with me as this is my first post. Bought a 2002 2500 SLT with 31700 miles about two months ago. Prior to my purchase I did the "cycle the ignition" trick so the odometer would reveal any codes that might be present in the computer, it showed nothing. I recently took the truck on a fishing trip to the San Juan River in New Mexico, truck was fantastic. I was cleaning out the truck tonight and just for grins I decided to cycle the ignition. Odometer came back with P1693 and P0216. :{ The weird thing is that the MIL did not light up whenever the codes were thrown. I see the MIL lit when I click the truck on prior to starting it, but it shuts off after I start the truck. I have been the only person to drive this since I bought it, never seen the MIL lit when the engine is running. Truck starts easy, runs fine, and no loss of power. I searched for P0216 but the posts I read mentioned the MIL being lit. Any ideas why mine is deciding not to light up? Only mod on the truck is a BHAF. I don't have a FP gauge (I know... gauges are next on the list). I plan on changing the fuel filter tomorrow, I know that won’t get rid of the code, it's the only thing I can think of right now. I am not sure if I take it to the dealer that they will blow me off since the MIL is not lit. Also, I bought the truck from a F*rd dealer in town (I think the CTD made their powerjokes look bad :-laf ), if anybody in the Denver area reads this, do you recommend a specific Dodge dealer I should see? The closest dealer to me is Johnson Auto Plaza. Sorry for the long post, any advice is appreciated.

A 1693 is noting important. However a 216 is a injection pump timing error. It is a sign that the vp 44 is failing. But you are under warrenty so you should be fine as long as the wire hasn't been taped. Check that out. If it has not been taped you have a warrenty. Your mil light should be on. There are ways to disable it but I really doubt that someone would do it on such a new truck. I ran with a 216 for about 40k. So you may be ok for a long time. You should also put in a fuel pressure guage soon. It will help find a pressure problem before you need a new vp44.

I had a poor idle and a 0216 code for a long time. I never had a MIL light ever, even when it wasn't idling on all cylinders. My truck is a '99 if that makes a difference. Once the new pump went on, the nice smooth idle came back.

Welcome to the club... .

As you saw, there is plenty of reading about the P0216 code and the different symptoms that go along with the failing vp44.

I ran about 3 months with the code coming and going, sometimes the light would come on and sometimes it wouldn't. I let it go until the truck started acting up and refusing to accelerate intermittently, then went to the dealer and had the vp44 replaced under warranty. Don't be surprised if it takes more than one trip to the dealer to get DC to buy in to the fact that there is a problem. My dealer had to get the area rep involved before DC would ship the pump.

Good luck.
