CTD will not start

Gentlemen, a friend wants your input. His 96 ram CTD 2x4 will start fine when it is cold,when it is hot and the engine is shut off the motor will not turn over. Just a click. The batteries have been checked and are OK(Sears batteries). Thanks.....

Sounds like starter solenoid contacts. It could be a relay, but since you get a click it's probably the big solenoid on the starter. You can buy a rebuild kit for it. I don't know the part number, but if you take the number off the starter to NAPA you should be able to get it. Dodge will want to sell you the whole starter.

check the starter when it is hot by putting a wire between the large battery lead on the starter and the small one. If the truck is a stick, make sure that you are in neutral before trying this. (don't want you to get your toes run over. ) This test should tell you if the starter is fully at fault. There is a contact in the solenoid that switches the high current to the starter motor. this is usually the fault. Also check that the solenoid plunger is not sticky with dried grease. Clean and lightly lube the plunger with something like silicone spray only. anything else will make it sticky. At UPS, we have 12valves in some of our package cars(believe it or not they're Fords), we have had trouble with the starters from diesel fuel leaking on them from the fuel filters. Ck this also. .
