What should the cruising RPM be?

I have been debating with a friend of mine about a few things and need some answers.

1. What is the recommended oil change interval for dino oil ?
2. What fuel additives to use, how much and when.
3. Which is better in the Cummins, dino oil, or synthetic. (just the facts please).
4. What the heck does "bombed" mean ?

I know to some this may see like simple questions but it has seemed to stump some of us here. I have been driving Dodge trucks long before it was cool, but I am new to Cummins. #ad

hey man, welcome to the family. your gonna love this stuff of makeing horsepower and not looseing milage or shortening engine life. OK, for myself I use 'rpm delo 15-40 oil'. I change it every 4500 to 5000 miles. I use 'stanidyne' fuel treatment and pump lube. and 'bombed' means pumping up the power and torque till you get a grinn that just will not go away. it's really fun when you can run some of these 'hotrods' into the dirt with a 6000lbs. truck. kinda gives a whole new meaning to the word 'SMOKIN'

I change oil every 5,000 Km, add stanadyne to the fuel. "BOMB" is an acronym stands for "Better of Modified Baby".

Use Stanadyne treatment for the fuel, about 6 oz per fill. Change the oil every 10,000Km, the book calls for 9700 KM. Use Esso XD3 15W40 summer and XD3 0W40 in the winter.

Change oil every 3k-4k miles. Oil filter too.
Use Delo400 10-40w year around.
Add 8oz (or so) of Power Service fuel additive with every tankful of fuel.

Cummins calls for 6000miles or 10000kms on their maintenance part of their website - they don't specify oil type so we can safely assume that this is with any SG rated DMO (dino oil).

Good luck on the synthetic vs. dino oil topic, I've seen these ones go on and on before.

Nope--remember, the "S" in "SG" stands for Spark ignition. It also needs the "C" rating ( for Compression ignition engines), which according to my '92 owner's manual is CE.

Hello CrewCabDiesel:
The recommended change interval is 5,000 miles; that's usually what I change mine at, although if I've done all highway driving I've been known to let it go to a little over 6,000 miles. I'm comfortable with that since I use what I feel is the best oil and filter: Cummins Premium Blue 2000 and the Fleetguard Microglass filter. The CPB 2000 is a semi-synthetic. I'll boil down all the stuff I've read/heard on synthetics right here: If you run in extrememly cold climates, or run extremely hard (heavy load constantly), then synthetics are best. They flow better in the very cold and don't breakdown under extreme heat. For most of us, regular oil is fine. My oil stays real clean looking even at 5K, with 102,000 on the engine.

I'm using Amsoil 15W-40 HD marine. I've tried 3 or 4 other oils and I noticed one thing almost right away. That was with the other oils, after shutdown, I would hear the turbo spool down for at most 2-3 seconds after getting out of truck. With amsoil I hear it for 6-8 seconds after getting out. I think that is a good sign personally.
The truck does seem to start a bit easier in cold weather (Below 0*C)
I change around every 6000Km depending on driving application.
I'm using stanydine PF for the fuel and notice a cleaner start-up, less smoke with WOT (wide open throttle) and a slightly improved idle speed (25-30rpm more)also smoother idle too.
BOMB > Bosch only my brother, is another acronym i read here.
Regards, Bush'
