The generic "Cummins" red ISB valve cover is available for the Dodge application, through Cummins for $86. (per Cummins NW, Renton, WA. , Dec. '99). They stated that the engine serial number would have to be known in order to procure the correct one for the Dodge application.

I elected to go a different route on my '98. 5 ISB; MikeR located a black Y2K Dodge/Cummins valve cover for my beloved Ram. This will look awesome on my black Sport Ram! Thanks Mike you're a real #ad
dude! I owe ya.

OBTW, what ever you do, do not screw up your valve cover gasket... they are $68. through Cummins (which equals about $400. through your local Dodge dealer. heh, heh, heh).

While on this subject--does any one have a ETH yet? Is the valve cover different?

I had heard a rumor about lettering on the cover saying something about "High Output" and being chrome plated.

Personally, I had rather have the red one. Just like the "big boys" with the N14 "red head".

Is there anywhere to get a chrome or aluminum for the 24 valves. I have seen them on 12 valves.

I just repainted mine black. The whole process started by sanding off the red lettering & clearcoat on the machined surfaces with a power sander. Then using a file & emery cloth I smoothed out all the casting imperfections & rough spots. After cleaning and applying 2 coats of black, I let it dry an hour, then resanded all the raised surfaces & lettering to remove the black. After cleaning, on went 2 coats of clear. Turned out great #ad
I went the DYI route so I could smooth it out and detail it the way I wanted.

Vaughn, I've been thinking about stripping mine like you did and then polishing it. How hard was it to strip the clear coat. When you say a power sander are you talking an orbital type, air tool, etc? How dificult do you think it would be to polish it smooth? Thanks in advance

I finally installed my '00 Dodge/Cummins (black) valve cover. It looks absolutely awesome! Especially since I have a Black Sport.

MichaelT: I like the Dodge/Cummins valve cover because the top of the valve cover has an angle running the length of the cover, the Cummins cover does not. The Cummins cover appears a little "blocky" and bland to me. Just my opinion.

The expression: "they don't build 'em like they used to" holds true to the 24v, valve covers as well. My '98. 5 OE valve cover weighs 7 5/8 lbs. (inc. oil fill cap. . no hold down bolts), my new '00 valve cover weighs 4 1/4 lbs (also inc. oil fill cap. . no hold down bolts). That's a disparity of 3 3/8 lbs. (all weights were taken with a Chatillon 0-15 lb. scale). I must have gotten a hold of the "racing" version. LOL The raised center rib running the length of the top of both valve covers is relieved on the underside of the '00 valve cover only. I also suspect the '00 valve cover has a thinner wall thickness however, I did not bother to mic. either cover. At first I was concerned about the possible increase in valve train noise although, after firing up the big beast, I wasn't able to detect any perceivable increase. #ad

A G-R-E-A-T B-I-G THANK YOU to MikeR for his continued effort in obtaining this *****in' valve cover. #ad

Bill I have a partial answer to you valve cover question on the 2001 ETH. It is black with aluminum finish in the top area where the five bolts are. It does not say HO. Looks, in my opinion, a lot sharper than the one pictured in the red book (aluminum finish with red letters). The part I don't know is if this new cover is used on all the 2001's or just the ETH.
