auto to manual eng differances?

Cummins Mower

There is a Cummins 4BT for sale on ebay. It is a take out from a delivery truck, complete with adapter housing, clutch, and manual transmission. I've looked on the Cummins Engine website and this little 4-banger is capable of 533 ft lbs! Imagine what a little BOMBING would do! I'm thinking of repowering my 80 GMC 4x4 with one of these little toughies-- torque and economy, plus that good ole Cummins clatter!

Anybody out there have experience with such a conversion?

There was a guy in FOURWHEELER a little over a year ago that put one in a '67 Wagoneer. He BOMBED it to 235hp and 550lbft.

What are they asking for the engine on Ebay?

A friend of mine was going to put one in his '72 Chevy 3/4 ton but a new one from Cummins was $6000.

4BT

The starting bid was 2000. 00 including the adapter and 4 speed transmission. I called the folks who are listing it... real nice guy from Georgia... he said they get them in fairly often, some turbos, some not, some intercooled. He said they usually get around 2600. 00 for them. They are guaranteed not to knock, smoke, or burn excessive oil. I told him black smoke was ok! :D :D :D He said he knows of some folks who have put them in Toyota FJ40 landcruisers, and one CJ5! A lot of torque in a small (but heavy --900 lbs) package. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=593188664

It looks like the auction ended, and nobody bid on it. I may have to call them again!

sounds pretty kewl. i was wondering how come the engine is not painted black, is that the standard color?? looks like it has the rotary style pump. What would happen if the pump was turned up and some lucas injectors where added?? i bet 30mpg in a lighter vehicle even in a bombed configuration would be no prob. i saw where you could get it with a th 400 i bet the power pulses and vibration of this little 4 banger would quickly grenade the trans LOL what about that 4 speed is it very strong??

That's the engine I would like to have transplanted into my Jeep so I could get more power and torque and also much better fuel mileage. Then I would have two diesel burning vehicles.

Aw, come on, someone buy me one for the PW... Would make a pretty good fit in the Power Wagon. But, then, I'd need yer help getting it mounted... .

And then some sound insulation (what do you mean, 3/32 steel isn't an effective sound deadner? It's painted... ), intercooler, good nozzles, re-tune the pump, get some more rpms, and then spend 5 years trying to get the wife to calm down :)

I've read the 4B's used the SM 465 4 speed in the delivery vans. Does anyone know if a ford (NP435) bolt pattern was ever built? I'd like one in my jeep too, I think I'll worry about the noise later.

I have two 4B150's in my boat. Great little engine. I have averaged 4 GPH combine in 900 hours of operation. That is have fast at 2500 RPM's and the other half at 1550 to 1850 RPM. They do vibrate a bit. They have have a 4B250 marine engine that has a inline pump and intercooler, and RPM's are up from 2800 max to 3000. Snow King

Actually, the only engines that I've seen painted black are the Dodges. Most others are in that Cummins Beige or Onan Green (in the gensets that I work on) and red on the fire pumps (and yes, there is a Cummins brand red color for that... and it's RED red).

Later,

Joe
