THE CUMMINS 1.675-BILLION INTRIGUE

I personally know someone who retired last year as a Cummins Engineer.
He helped design wiring harnesses on their engines as well as projects pertaining to emissions control. I remember he told me how EPA employees were involved with the final decision on all emissions designs.
They had a nickname for EPA. Employment Protection Agency. Every time Cummins met EPA standards, the standards changed.
I don't trust anything the government accuses others of doing.

I just received my recall notice for the reflash of computer for emissions. It states California residents cannot renew registration until proof of recall is complete. It bothers me that this is just more ammunition for the EPA and their war on diesels. I do not know all of the details but from the surface it puts Cummins in the headlines and not for innovation. This does not help with the push-back on EV's. I fear us being forced into EV's because of headlines like this.

I'm sorry to hear this. :(

I have thought for a long time that the EPA and CARB use a bate and switch policy. Certify you today (aren't they doing the tests and certifications?) and fine you tomorrow. Emissions are big business! I'm surprised the after market guys like Banks, BD and others haven't been find even though their products have certifications. I'm very disappointed that Cummins agreed to this fine if their engine are in compliance and or when certified.

My other problem with this, why is it affecting older vehicles? Why do they even care? Who even updates the ECU on an 11 year old vehicle for emissions at this point?

I'd understand if it was on a brand spanking new 2023/2024 RAM. But going after a 2013??? A good chance a decent amount of those trucks are long gone by now.

Besides that point, as the vehicle wears, so does the emissions components.

Arrived today, January 2, 2024 for our 2018 2500 located in Maryland. Zero details who done it and why. Total guess is NOX levels are too high in some States or maybe all?

My coworker just had his 2020 GMC Duramax recalled for emmisions re-flash. He said something about Regen Temps... but now it uses more fuel and more DEF. so sounds more like secret re-tuning.
Thanks for the information.
I'm sorry your coworker is having to go through that.
I stand corrected.
I may be wrong about other things too, but I'm convinced that there is a degree of dishonesty with the government accountability of what they approved and now claim that Cummins was trying to hide something.

I don't know anything just remember him telling me about it shortly after he bought it used. I will say it seems strange to me they would cure regen temps by more fuel consumption... He also said he's using more DEF. I checked my VIN today, still have the tailgate latch open but nothing on emissions yet. I will hold out if they send me one until more is understood.

SO, has anyone found out specifically what this "67A" Emission Recall / Re - flash does to our trucks? I got my notice in the mail. Mine is at 98K - all stock - burns clean from what I can tell - NO SOOT in tail pipe. My 2014 has been Super Dependable except recent unexpected fan pulley hub bearing failure on trip that cascaded into a (1) nicked the belt as it dipped into crankshaft pulley (2) which then a small part of the belt slapped the vulnerable upper radiator y pipe (breaking it) and (3) damaged the crankshaft position sensor and (4) damaged the clutch fan bearing. After an expensive OTR repair I made it home with the fiver. I am replacing all belts, pulleys, hoses and doing and EGR service while in there but am concerned now the performance and efficiency may be significantly altered on my truck with a reflash.

I'm also waiting to see what the actual effect of this update is on the drivability, torque and horsepower or my 2013, 3500 dually. It's not about the soot, it's about the NOx - nitrous oxide emissions. Mine also runs nice and clean like yours - no soot or smoke - even when towing heavy. I use about a gallon of DEF every 1000 km when towing. You can follow my truck on the highway and the exhaust smells clean. No choking like the old days LOL.
Hopefully, we'll see a Youtube video or someone here on the forum about the actual measured effects of this update so many of us who have a choice can decide if we want to get it done or not.

Almost none of us do anything tangible to push back against the efforts of the EPA. Worse, some of us are in on the skim. An example: my job is to indirectly help companies and municipalities comply with EPA regulations which are enforced by state agencies. Most of this gets built into consumer prices and taxes. I for one am guilty, and I hate it.

If the EPA's certification of emissions on a vehicle forbade future lawsuits, they would not have the opportunity to prosecute later, for an error of omission on their part. In other words, the EPA is the ultimate arbiter of emissions but they refuse to take responsibility. Their Emissions Defeat Device regulations leave the door open for them to bring a company up on charges at any time. Kind of like IRS laws / regulations / rulings - I believe it was one of the FairTax books that said most people could be brought up on charges at any time because it is nearly impossible to always be in compliance with the 70k pages. Note this - the EPA is rarely blamed for not doing what people think they are supposed to be doing.

So, as a manufacturer, as long as we comply with their emissions requirements, we're ok, right? Part of the EPA's countenance is to convey a message to companies like Cummins: you will bend the knee to us, you will pinch the incense, you will abide by every whim we have, you will exist for our pleasure.

Do you really think the EPA will be satisfied if they removed all diesel vehicles from the road? If they removed all gasoline vehicles as well, would they then be satisfied?

What recourse do we currently have? One political party that pushes for more EPA power and their supposed counterpart being nothing more than controlled opposition? The controlled opposition party won't even call out obvious election fraud? Even phony elections have consequences.
