A good friend of mine is doing the swap mentioned in the title of this thread. Recently, he posed an interesting question to me via email that I wasn't able to answer.

This is what he wrote:

"Here's one for you. On the very early Cummins engines that were put in Rams, they ran an 11" clutch. Do you know what diameter the flywheel was? In other words, if you took a tape measure and measured the maximum OD (most likely the ring gear), what would that be? I need to find flywheel for my 1650 conversion that is less than 14" in diameter otherwise I cannot use my original bell housing (it would end up requiring a lot of cutting and grinding to make it fit then). "

What is the overall OD of the flywheels/flexplates used in the Dodge/Cummins? Since the ring gears are all the same diameter, I'd venture to guess that they're all pretty much the same diameter... but I don't know what the spec is.

Thanks,

Matt

I seem to remember my flywheel on my 90 was 13". But that was remembering something from 5 years ago so... A Cummins distributor should be able to tell you if you can find one.

Oliver 1650 B5.9 swap

i think the clutch is 131/4 " but the fly wheel 131/2 " to 14"

Why not use a Sae bell houseing and fly wheel or

use a set up from a Case farm tractor with a cummins or a Kamatsu Loader

My old '93 SACHS pressure plate measures 14 3/8" across. I don't know what the flywheel is it's in the truck:rolleyes:

Why don't you give Peter at SBC a call I'm sure he could tell you...

I would suggest you go to "yesterdaystractors" web site. Click on Olivers, a guy by the site name of shep from virginia on that site, has several Olivers with Cummins in them. If you have trouble finding info, e-mail me. jps -- email address removed --

I called Peter at SBC - great guy on the phone as usual.

He went and measured a flywheel he had on the shelf...

~15. 5" OD at the ring gear

~1. 5" thick

My friend has seen Shep's work. He doesn't want to hack the frame like Shep did because he used that big SAE bellhousing. He's going to use the Ollie's bellhousing and now that we got the 'bad news' - a custom flywheel will be needed. The finished product should look very close to OEM when it is all said and done.

He's very good at restoring stuff - attached are pics of his old IH grain truck - a before/after shot of the engine.

Thanks,

Matt

1650 oliver

Nice work on the truck engine. We have a 1755 Oliver,in our area, with a Cummins in it. I know it is for sale. Have seen it, looks pretty good. I know the guy that did the work but have never driven the tractor. Have a good one, jps
