Need help, on what to look for on the Generator part of this Cummins Big Cam 290, 215kw, 480 volts, 3 phase genset. it says its been load tested {whatever the hell that really means}

Im not to very concerned with the motor part anyone with a hand full of tools can rebuild a 290.

BIG

Big, Load testing for a gen set is basically a 100% plus load on the Gen set for a specific amount of time to verify nothing happens. The customer gets a cert that it passed.

Any reason why you want one that old? Simplicity?

because I can work on the Cummins

WAY MORE power than I will EVER use but at the price even if the motor should need to be freshened up, is still about what would be paid for the normal Home genset with not much more than a Lawnmower motor powering it

Big, I thought you had contracted to "juice" a subdivision in a power outage.

Yep!!!!! its a big rascal, I need to get a fuel tank. The one that was built into the stand isn't worth fixing. As soon as the weather permits Im pouring a slab for a Gen Building. The motor runs pretty well, pulling the pump, injectors & maybe a turbo have them gone through & run the rack.

Its nice to work on things that a guy doesn't need to be a NASA Rocket Scientist to turn a wrench on.

Big, do you have 3 phase 480 volt pumps or something?
If not you have to factor in transformers to drop voltage to a usable level... and be sure to size them properly.

I do have some serious voltage running the house SORT OF this Indiana home is total electric, or I should say IT USE TO BE!!

Im not really into working on electric after getting knocked on my XXX with 220 one time, it was enough for me to let someone with EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE do all the work. I will have a Miller wire feed in the shop extra large compressor.

The reason I say sort of is that I installed a Heat Master Wood boiler for heat but kept the original Elect. system as back up. I was thinking about the Elect. water heater being used part time by running the house hot water run through the outside boiler but have decided to see what the boiler can handle before I make the determination, Im going to have a shop built in the Spring and hope to heat it with the boiler.

I have someone that knows what he's doing from where I work going to make ALL the connections he's the Electrician that fixes the problems at the fuel Rack of the company we work for, I'm sure that doing this will pose no problem for his skills.

The main reason for going with something this large is that it will handle the ENTIRE house with no problem & the fact that I can do everything to the Cum-A-Part Motor. Propane is outrageously priced here in at least this part of Indiana & the lack of NG located on the property helped with the decision also.

FREE DIESEL HELPS A LOT TOO ;)

480 volt 3 phase will do more than knock you on your XXX if you'r not careful. We've got it on our older boat, I've seen what happens when a reversing switch sticks BOOM and the flash of light. It blew the steel switch cover off the motor controller.
