I am considering using Cummins Blue 2000 synthetic blend this winter. It appears to be a well rounded oil when comparing quality and price. Great Plains Cummins of Sioux Falls SD, said they'd sell it to me for $9. 95 per gal. . I was wondering if any one else out there is using this oil, as I am wondering about the flowability of this oil in sub-zero temps. The dealer said it only comes in 15-40 wieght. Seems heavy for winter, and I wonder if synthetics really perform that well. Any other tips on this oil are appricated. I know there are alot of syn. oils out there, but I really seem to have a limited selection in my area.

Two friends of mine have run Mobil One in their '96 diesels from day one and have had NO problems. I plan to use Mobil One after the first 1000 miles.

Eugene, I'm assuming that you see some temps below 0 often in your neck of the woods. With that in mind, I would use a diesel rated (CG/SH) 5W-30 synthetic if your heart is really set on synthetic oil. Keep in mind I have a 24V engine, you don't, but I would think that the oil requirements would be the same. Be very sure the oil is rated for diesel engines as this will help with soot and ash control. The manual for my 24V engine says that you can use 10W-30 down to -10 degrees if you have the engine block heater. Without the heater it recommends 5W-30. 15W-40 is not recommended in temperatures that drop below 10 degrees F.
Good luck.

Eugene,
The Cummins Blue 2000 is a good oil, but there are better. If you use ANY synthetic, make sure it is API rated CG-4/CH-4. I don't think Mobil 1 is, however.

As too the 15W-40 SAE grade, it should be good for 10-15 below. I used the Amsoil Synthetic 15W-40 for the first 105,000 on my 94 Dodge, but have since switched too the
5W-30 Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel oil.

To give you an idea of the flowability, the 15W-40 has a pour point of -45 F. The 5W-30 has pour point of -60 F.

Wayne,

What is the CG-1/CH-4 rating?
I'll check on Mobil One to make sure before I use it.
Like I said, I have two friends using Mobil One since '96 without a problem.
One gets 26mpg on the highway. (It might have nothing to do with the oil).

I have checked, Mobil 1 is not rated for the Cummins Turbo Diesel engines. Also I have not been able to find a conventional oil rated for Diesels in a 5-30 wieght. Rotella and Delo only go as low as 10-30. Hey amsoilman hows that stuff work and what does it cost. Seen the website, but i'm not sure about the extended drain idea. Price of the oil is a concern for me because I just can't bring my self to run over 5,000 miles per oil change. And bmann, I here what your saying. I know alot of guy who can't say enough about Mobil 1. Even with out
the CG4/CH4 rating I still think about using it, even at 4$ per quart.

The main thing to remember here is that a diesel makes different demands on oil than a gasoline engine. Use what you want, but don't discount the necessity of high detergent content which isn't found in most "gasoline" geared engine oils.

I have used PB 2000 for all 45k i have on my 97 and have no complaints. We get down in the -20 -30 range frequently here in Montana. I thought that the 15w-40 partial synthetic would perform (flow) better when cold, since it is partial syn. ???????
The latest batch i bought from my cummins dealer is rated CH-4, but says it meets CH-4, CG-4, CF-4 and CF/SG requirements. .

WHAT DOES ALL THAT MEAN????

Thanks in advance.

What does all that mean? I read an article in one of my equipment mags. about oil classifications. The new low emission diesel engines have their timing retarded and also the top ring us moved higher up on the piston. This creates more soot and ash finding it's way into the crankcase. The motor oils had to be improved. More additives added. Hence the new classification numbers and letters. I have a tuff time explaining things, but maybe this will help. Regards, bilford.

Also, you can't go wrong with Mobile Delvac 1300 in summer and Delvac 1 in the dead of winter. There is a big contstruction co. here in CT. that has over 100 dump trucks and even more heavy equipment. They spent a ton of money on oil research. They use all Mobil pruducts. Regards, bilford.

Guys,
There is an article in the current issue of TDR that kinda speaks for itself, but it goes like this put 15-40W and 5-30W in your freezer for 24 hours, then pour them out of the bottle, noticable difference. i have ask a lot of companies in the past couple of months about thier synthetic oils(Industrial suppliers)trying to find a more economical oil, some of them have suggested "AMSOIL" by brand and indicated you wont find a better oil.

I use Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40, and encountered no problems with a visit to Northern Wisconsin last December (-12f. ). I did use the block heater for a couple of hours prior to engine start, though. I have a '99 2500 w/5 speed.

WOW, thanks tuboj99!!! That increased my knowledge on oil substantially. So now my question is how many other oils out there are rated CH-4?? This could be a major factor in chosing any oil from my standpoint. PB 2000 just started advertising this rating.
Thanks!
Jack
