Cummins in China's truck engine venture

NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. (CMI. N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday said it will form a joint venture in China to produce light-duty truck engines there.
Light-duty is a segment of China's engine market in which Cummins does not currently compete.

Cummins, the leading foreign producer of heavy-duty truck engines, said it signed a feasibility study plan with Beijing-based Beiqi Foton Motor, the final step toward the formation of the 50/50 joint venture.
It said the joint venture is expected to begin operations this year, with production starting as early as 2008. The engines will be suitable for pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and small construction equipment, among other uses, Cummins said.
Cummins shares were trading down 11 cents at $105. 69 on the New York Stock Exchange.
