Nice Story Website "The Diesel Gypsy"

I found this about the Detroit Diesel Series 40. Having dealt with the new Series 60 in the big trucks I think it would be a great engine. The 60 gets excellent mpg compared to the Cummins and Cat. Check it out!

Detroit Diesel Power Built To Perform!

The Detroit Diesel Series 40 engine is the latest generation in a family of diesel engines with over 100 years of experience. The Series 40 is an entirely new design, engineered and manufactured using the most advanced technology available today. The result is a lightweight, 4-cycle, inline, six cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine spanning a horsepower range of 160 to 330 horsepower. Comprised of 7. 6 and 8. 7 liter displacements, the Series 40 engine family is available in turbocharged and turbocharged air-to-air charge cooled models.

The four models in the Series 40 family provide the engine with versatility in the automotive, construction, industrial, and generator set markets. The two displacements of the Series 40 allow this engine series to provide a wide range of horsepower offerings in all market sectors. This enables the Series 40 to offer power that is needed under any condition while maintaining the high standards of performance the engine achieves.

The reliability and durability of the Series 40 engine have been assured by a host of premium features. These include a high strength alloy cast iron deep skirt cylinder block with wet-type replacement liners, induction hardened crankshaft, premium design cylinder head with replaceable liners, induction hardened crankshaft, premium design cylinder head with replaceable valve guides and valve seat inserts, and large crankshaft and connecting rod bearings - all designed to provide maximum life.

It certainly is designed to compete with Cummins, although it looks like it's designed to compete with the 8. 3L C-series Cummins more than the 5. 9L B-series Cummins engine.

Intertrashinal you say? Yuck! Don't get me wrong I wouldn't give up my Cummins for anything but that definitely rules them out! To Detroit's credit the only problems I have encountered with the Series 60 ( and heard similar complaints) are with the alternator, either failure of the alternator of belt failures. The guy I haul cattle for part time has 3 Pete's and 1 Freighshaker, 1 -550 Cat, 1- 525 Cummins, 1- 500 Cummins, and a 470/500 DDEC. The Cat will probably pull longer on a hill but both the Cummins are right on it's heels... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .....

Seems like 330hp for 7. 6L and 8. 7L is kind of low for where the new engines are running.

But I'm guess that the 330 hp will run good with the 1075lbs no matter the litter side!!

The IHC DT466 power plant has been around for years, and just like Cummins, gets better every year. I run one in a IHC TD-15 Crawler Tractor for years, it would run circles around the Cat D-6C of the same era. In the winter time when it was cold, if the batterys would turn it over, it would start instantly :) unlike the Cat :( . I also had a good friend with one in a Log Truck, it did amazingly well, in spite of our badmouthing him with our Cummins and Mack powered trucks. In the case of the power rating of the IHC pickup in another thread, It is derated just like the 5. 9 in the Dodge. It is capable of some serious power!!

so DC owns detroitdiesel right? and if detroitdiesel is making/using a navistar engine, does that logic mean that all the fords with navistar diesels out there have daimlerchrysler engines in them ??? :-laf :-laf

... waiting for this to hit the fan :-laf

The 466 is a very good engine the low HP ratings are due to the fact they are industrial HD rated. They are expected to run 330 hp and max torque 100% duty cycle. See my sig.
