working on my conversion cummins/ford

Dually wheel offsets

Hello all,

I am new to this forum. I need a little help with a cummins swap. We are currently looking into swapping a cummins from a 1990 Dodge 3/4 ton into either a Ford or GM ext cab dually, prefer 4x4. We are having a hard time deciding what would be the better/easier truck to swap this motor into.

We currently have a 1995 GMC ext cab dually 4x4. It seems like it may be a fairly complicated swap to put the cummins into this truck seeing as it has a computer controlled auto transmission and electric assist steering. Is this swap a viable option? Would we be better off doing the swap into a late 80's early 90's GM or Ford?

I look forward to hearing all of your opinions on this swap.

Thank you,

Jason

What's legal

Bouncing from state to state in the military, I have found that most allow a newer engine in an older chassis but not the other way around. Big brother is always watching.

With the 80's Fords, look into weak areas in the frame.

I "Have heard" there were some problems.

Do a search under this forum for other Ford and GM swaps.

I've been here about six months and have seen quite a few posts.

Good luck,

re: What's legal

Thank you for your reply. Actually we are in Saskathcewan Canada and as it stands right now there are no emmisions laws holding us back from doing the swap into the 95 GMC.

Once I discovered this website/forum I scimmed over almost all of the posts and grabbed any information that I could out of them (alot of info). All of which will help in making the decision on which brand/year to go with and who we may be able to contact for the parts that we may need.

I am curious to find out what peoples oppinions are about putting a Cummins in the 95 GMC 4x4 and an auto transmission. Or any info that they may have regarding this swap.

When you say "electric assist steering" I have never heard of this. What is it?

The computer controled trans is a easy fix, you can buy aftermarket controlers for them. If you leave the HP at the stock levels the GM trans will survive fairly well.

The Cummins is about 350 pound heavier than the 6. 5 TD so you will have to install 1 ton bars in the front if you keep the IFS.
