Here's a question I was pondering the other day. When you convert the chevy from a gasser to the cummins will the gauges still work if you hook them back up or I'm going to half to go get for a chevy diesel so I can still the diesel warning lights?

Here's a question I was pondering the other day. When you convert the chevy from a gasser to the cummins will the gauges still work if you hook them back up or I'm going to half to go get for a chevy diesel so I can still the diesel warning lights?

Gauges will work no matter what engine you put in the truck, you just have to put the sending units into the new engine. The wiring harness will need to be shortened and lengthened in various sections, but its not a big deal.

Some of the newer gauges in Ford and and GM vehicles are not much more than an on/off switch. Oil pressures gauges for example are not as accurate as you would be led to believe. I can't remember if was a GM or Ford truck anymore, but when I ohmed the sending unit to see its range, all it would do is click on or off when pressurized. For that reason, I'd look into aftermarket mechanical gauges, at least for temp/oil pressure readings.

Don't know what warning lights you want to retain, but if you are referring to warm up lights for the manifold air temp, you can install a sending unit in the manifold like the dodge has and have it feed a simple light in the dash, when the sensor is heated it will close the circuit and energize the light.

The rest of the "idiot lights" for GM diesels are pretty much useless to me. Water in fuel warning light can be set up the same as the preheater sensor, just connect it to the fuel filters conductor sensor and remember to label the light so you readily remember when it comes on.
