I have seen a few events on the calendar during summer months when Cummins opens there doors for tours. I am busy then and am unable to make it. I would LOVE to tour one of their facilities. Does anyone know if they have weekly, or daily tours. Does anyone know whom I should contact for the best tour. Thanks for the feed back. Dave

I had the very enjoyable experience of touring the Cummins B5. 9 engine facility during the TDR rally in August 2002. The management and employees all made the entire group of us feel like family members. A truly great bunch of people.

I regret that I don't remember the name of the nice woman who was the plant PR person. Maybe someone who knows will reply. If nobody replies with her name I'd suggest sending an e-mail or making a phone call to Cummins. Someone will forward your message or connect you to the correct person.

I'd enjoy taking the tour again.

Wish I could see that plant. I did get to tour the Cummins marine plant in Charleston a few years ago. I went with a group of boaters. Cummins rolled out the red carpet for us as well.

They don't build engines there though, they marinize base engines to specific orders. (they also build fire pump engines there)

I was impressed with their professionalism, attention to detail, orderliness, yada, yada.

Would you have thought that they reject engines at final inspect for paint runs, orangepeel, etc??? They make em go back thru the paint line again.

They also guarantee the horspower level of the specific engine you order... . in other words... if you order a 270... . they guarantee a MINIMUM of 270... . not an average number like most engine building plants.

I wonder if the truck plant has that policy... I would suspect so.

I was through the Signature plant a few years ago, and found that they dyno all engines before shipment, and a certain percent get run 20% over fuel and rpm for a specified period of time. (I think it was 20% over - don't remember for sure. ) As a machinest, it was a great tour - but I knew someone who took us through personally.

I'll bet you can find a PR person, and they'll be able to tell you about tours. The headquarters is open to visitors during normal business hours, and it is worth seeing as well.

I too have toured the Cummins Mid-Range Engine Plant (CMEP) in Walesboro several times. It is a fascinating tour and impressive experience. Yes, all the engines built are dyno tested before they are painted and made ready for shipment.

If you ever have the opportunity to tour any of Cummins's plants, take the time. It's well worth the effort.

As a salesman for a major heavy duty truck manufacturer which was Cummins's biggest customer, I have toured the "big engine" plant in Columbus several times. One year a group of us was given a tour the Cummins R&D and engine test facility... a rare treat one will never never forget!
