Does anyone know when the new automatic transmission will be available with the HO engine (48re)? Also, does anyone know if D-C will ever produce a 5-speed transmission that will compete with F*#Ds new 5-speed (torque-shift) and G-Motor's 5-speed (Allison)? I think they both support the tow/haul mode feature.

The info that I have is that it will be a mid-year introduction (January of '03 was what they told us back at the press intro). It will definately be a 4 speed and not a 5 speed. The 5 speed transmission is for the Hemi motor only. The new trans is the 48re which will basically be a beefed up 47re from what we were told back in february. They were pretty tight lipped about it because it was a mistake that it was even mentioned in the press kit - they denied it's existance at first until I pointed out that it was in the press kit, then I got this look  !!

have any auto trucks hit the streets yet ?

and i ain't holding my breath for a dodge trans holding the HO power from the factory  ...

Inarush76 and I were talking about the 48re the other day and it seems they have addressed several issues with it, the one were we were talking about was the new pump in it, suppose to have greatly increased is total pumping capablity especially at low RPM, Wonder if it still has the same junkie converter in it. A girl was talking to me about my truck a while back and the stuff I did to my transmission and the statement she made was "why don't they address that issue at the factory level"... ... duh, big red truck!

The story I heard at the '02 TDR Nationals seminar was that the 48RE will be a 4 speed, will be exhaust brake compatatble, and the torque converter will lock up in each gear except 1st. Nothing was said about a Tow-Haul mode.

auto trans

I was at an allison trans school this spring for the light duty allison, same that is in the chevy, and the allison man told me that the allison will be in the chassis cabs and the others will get a 5 speed that presumably will be a MB unit. By the way he also told me that D/C owns allison!

As you can see the new 5 speed transmission is an option for the Hemi only. The info that we got at that time was that the 48re would also be available with the HO when it's released. BTW, they also told our group at the nationals that the 48re would be exhaust brake compatible.

Allison Transmission is still a GM division. It was Detroit Diesel that became a DC property after being a GM division (with a pause for Roger Penske.

O. K. , I gotta ask.

Steve, I read your outstanding review of the '03 press release back in Feb. Are the D/C guys confused by stating that the 48RE is going to be mated to the HO Cummins if the specs state that it will be mated to the standard-output Cummins?

Mopar-muscle, the only autos on the streets have the 47RE and standard-output Cummins.

From everything I've heard both on that day and since, no. The mistake was made by the marketing people back then to even mention the 48re in the press release. When I asked about it at first they said it didn't exist and that the 47re was going in the new trucks. Then I told them it was in the press release and showed them where it was in the release. They were surprised it was there. Mistakes do happen when you have corporations that size. We talked with the top guy there in charge of driveline stuff (a VP at D/C I believe) and asked him about the 48re and that's when he told us that it was going to be a mid year 03 intro, that it was a beefed up 47re, and that the HO motor would be available with it.

48re

I was told by a fleet mgr 2 weeks ago, that it would be avail. for order mid-late Dec. Delivery mid May-June.
