Just curious if anyone has ever tried to put a CTD in a tractor. The reason I ask is that I know that International uses their DT466 interchangebly between heavy duty trucks and a lot of bigger (100 to 150 HP) tractors such as IH and John Deere. Just curious if anyone has ever heard of trying to put one of these awesome Cummins engines in a pulling tractor. Seems like a no brainer if it would work. I mean I would think you could get 300 HP and 700 ft/lbs out of a 12 valve pretty easy. I'm sure you could find one at a salvage yard that needed an overhaul for a reasonable price.

There are lots of shops and farmers that repower tractors with a Cummins or other engines.

For instance, putting in a 8. 3L in place of a 426 CID Allis-Chalmers engine in a 8070 Allis- Chalmers tractor. Some others are putting the 5. 9L in IH tractors, such as a 806. It is only limited to your imagination and wallet.

A little off the repower line but Case offers Cummins motors in their products as does Agco in their White, Catepillar Ag, Massey Ferguson, and one other line that has slipped my mind a the moment.

The 4B?, 6B5. 9 and 6C8. 3 were all originally developed by Consolidated Diesel, a joint venture between Case IH and Cummins, to be used mainly as small to midsize tractor engines. I don't know if your talking about a sled pulling tractor or a working tractor but in a working tractor I bet a B5. 9 wouldn't hold up very well over about 150 PTO HP, there's a reason Case IH uses the C8. 3 in the larger tractors ;)

BTW I converted an older Case W36 loader to a 235HP 6CTA8. 3 and its been a great engine so far.

Case uses the motors pretty heavily in their spray rigs. both 5. 9s and 8. 3s. They use the 8. 3s in alotta the mid range tractors. I believe they use the 3. 9s in skid steers and backhoes. Not real sure what Case uses in the big 4wds tho.

I haven't seen a Cat tractor with a cummins motor yet tho. Most of them have C10-15 or whatever the Cat motor numbers are. Theres a kit out there somewhere to repower gleaners with 8. 3s. I believe Agco sells it if I remember right.

There were tractors manufactured under both the CASE and CASE IH name badge that came with the 5. 9 cummins. I remember seeing around mid 80's models, I believe the 1896 was one of them. I believe they were rated about 100 PTO HP.

We got a ISB in a haggie STS10 sprayer, the one we had before that had a BTA. We used to have a AC 8070 with a 220hp CTA. Believe it or not, i ripped the transmission out of that a few times too. We also have a JD 4640 with a CTA and it works pretty good except the bock cracked on it from either a bad desing on the motor mounts or one too many tractor pulls after a slight pump adjustmate.

Champion 710A road graders have had 6bt cCummins in them for a long, long time. They used the 6bt in a lot of backhoe and medium tractor applications for almost ever.
