I was at the Cummins store today and a customer was complaining because his new 5. 9 370 hp replacement engines weren't giving him as much speed as the old worn out 5. 9 300 hp engines that he took out. Same boat, same props, same everything, just new higher hp rated engines putting out less performance! Tell me something to keep me from thinkin' that advertised hp, like statistics, do lie!

Either they lie, or those darn computers in the engine make them slow! Also, if you looked at a graph of the power, it might show that the newer engine is putting out more peak power, just not in the right spot(rpm range). Like if you go drive a 2001 (which I have) you have to wait on the turbo to spool up to go anywhere unlike the older ones like ours which, to me, seem to have it right off the bottom #ad

I agree with Wirenut on the part about wrong RPM, the newer motors probably make there power at a higher RPM so he would need to goto smaller pitched props to get the new engines into there powerband. Just like the people with the new Overvalved motors are liking 4:10's beter than 3:5's but the real CUMMINS seem to work better with 3:5's unless hauling lots of weight.
Also could have some kind of preprogramed break in curve in the computer, some of the new Mercury outboards are that way, won't let you get full power until after 10-20 hours.

The only thing I can I can tell you for sure is that he's a REALLY unhappy camper. Can you imagine what a couple of 370 horse Cummins 5. 9's cost, including installation? I don't EVEN want to know!
