I want a boat. I don't want a wimpy 2 stroke outboard, after all if i'm gonna burn oil I'm gonna burn #2. I dont know anything about power boats ( I sail a little). What manufacturers use (used?) the 5. 9 ??? How big a boat do ya gotta buy to get one with a CUmmins?

Hey Gifford, I have a cousin who does yatch restorations. He has had great success switching over other power plants to the 6B Cummins. Most of his customers boats are in the 30 to 100ft range. I would guess that the minimum size for a boat to have a 6b would be 25ft. Even this may be a little small. He does repair for the Coast Guard and Corp. of Engineers and they love the 6b in their non pursuit boats.

I'm not sure who installs Cummins in new boats, but if the price is right, builders will put whatever you want in them. My family owns Gulf shrimp boats (Shrimpy:D ) and my brothers boat had the big Cummins in it. I knew it as a KTA-1150. It was inter and after cooled, and was running approx. 575 hp. These engines are rated at up to 650 hp continous. He had two in his boat and was the KING of the Gulf in pulling wars. They back up to each other and use a hauser rope tied stern to stern and see who goes backward. He pulled against everything from twin v-8 detroits, V-12 CATS and MANNS and never lost. There were a couple of draws, (neither pulled the other backwards) but no losses.

The key for him was 59" Stainless props with Kort nozzles... ...

I know Bayliner uses Cummins as DEZLPWR said, also Carver uses them in the 30-40 ft class. I worked on a Carver 40ft that was brand new and sunk, it had twin M-11 600hp. I almost forgot, I used to prep the 6b marines that were sold to Tollycraft a few years ago. I know Tollycraft is out of business but there are probably some on the used market.

There are a lot of manufacturers out there that used Cummins at one time or another, and used anything from 4Bs' up to QSK 19s' in the pleasure type crafts.

I would assume you need to look at 24ft and bigger to get a Cummins in general. Also remember that some of the commercial gillnet boats used Cummins power. The ones I've seen were usually a single engine. Also have seen approx. 20 ft sled with 6BTA- 300 and jet pump.

Remember if you are buying new you can probably spec a boat with a Cummins. I would also spec a Twin Disc brand gearbox, if going with a prop drive. (this is only my opinion).

So getting rid of my 350 chevy for a Cummins B might be a little outrageous in my 22' open bow?

I might be just the guy.....

:D Oo.

As much as I love my Cummins , it won't replace the 540ci (675hp) BB chevy in my Scarab.

Diesels are mostly for cruisers or industrial type boats.

Across the pond , they use allot of Seatek Diesels in thier Class 1 offshore racing, These are 40+ ft 160mph Cats. They do need a shiftable gearbox though.

The problem of a diesel in the average sport boat is by the time you prop it for the torque you have after the boost is up you won't be able to get the boat on plan when the motor isn't boosted up, hence the gearboxes in the race boats.

My Dad has 42" Jefferson Sundeck which has twin 12v's

He lives aboard and run the thing to death

The motors will not quite

later

Cummins Love Water

I have pairs of KTA38-M2's in two boats, making 1100 HP per engine. I tried to shoehorn them in my truck, but there was some interference. Looking to put a pair of their new 60 liter engines in something soon. Now THOSE would be fun to BOMB...

When you're talking about boats big and expen$ive enough to come with diesel power, you can often specify the engines you want.

One of my charter boats has twin 5. 9 280 hp cummins. The engines are 3 years old 12 V and have a 7100 injection pump and 5 inch wet exhaust. They weigh 1280 pounds. The 5. 9 series goes up to 370Hp. Cummins has engines that go up to 2000HP. My twin engines with gear cost $30K each. Can they be bombed I am looking at 370 injectors, 3000rpm govern spring, and a fueling plate. Are diesels fast look up the 42Ft Fountain with Yanmar Diesels 70 Plus Miles per hour.

Those mercury's are faster... To the gas station, repair shop, and in devaluing the price of the boat. When they come up with a fast boat that gets 3 miles to gallon, sleeps 8 people, has a range of 800 miles, cruise at 40KT (46MPH), runs in 6ft to 8ft seas, and has a 2000lb fish hold then will it catch my attention.
