Hey ya all,

I've had this wild idea for a few years (based on owning a 1979 LRE)...

I'd like to build a Cummins powered 2wd shortbox regular cab auto truck and make it look like a LRE or Midnight Express.

the problem... which is cheaper?

buy a 1/2ton stepside truck and put a Cummins in it,
orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

buy a 3/4 ton Cummins truck, cut the frame, install a stepside box, add stacks , etc ...?

I realize I'll have to do paint/bodywork, exhaust, etc to get it how I want it, but I can do the wrenching.

I'm thinking it would be cheaper and less work to get a Cummins truck, shorten the frame, add box, wood bed, stacks. since all the diesel equipment is already installed.

But, CRD trucks from 1990-1993 are still going for a good amount of dough.

any of you experts have any advice?

Buy a Cummins powered truck and shorten the WB. The frame is heavier and you get all the parts you need. David

After looking at other threads, it looks like the cheaper way to go is gasser to CTD conversion is the way to go. I don't have a time crunch so I can take my time getting all the parts which will save me time AND I get a much more personal touch with the truck.

Unless I come across a SMOKING CTD 3/4 2wd truck deal, then I'll stick with getting a cheap gasser and converting. actually found a truck that will fit my needs for $800. too bad now is not the best time to buy. will probably start looking for truck and parts sometime after Christmas.

You can probbaly make the 1/2 frame work but I would box it to be safe. As far as that goes, the cummins fames need boxing if you turn the wick up very much.

good to know. so either way, gotta box it. well heck, then I'd go 1/2 ton. hmmm... gonna have to make a price list to see which way to go. I do know that I will mod the engine a bit to get a bit more power. 300-400hp. nothing TOO wild. I won't be doing any towing or hauling. just a play truck. I already have the work truck.

At that power level it pushes the TQ up to 800-900 ft lbs and that is what will cause issues. Boxing the frame should allow you to use a 1/2 frame to make it work.

Agreed... I like the 1/2 ton idea, as it's lighter overall. Not that you care with 400hp, but every few pounds is dragging weight.... I happen to have an '89 I'm going to convert, myself. Some ladder bars on front and rear axle, with coil springs over 2.5 ton Clarke rear ends.... :D .... when I retire and get the time....
