I finally got this e-mail from Cummins today on the oil filter questions from the old site. Here it is:

John,

Thanks for your email message.

The proper oil filter for the 24-valve Dodge engine is the Fleetguard LF 3885 the LF 3552 should no longer be used. We must advise that it is almost impossible for us to troubleshoot engine problems by email. There are sometimes many factors that affect the determination of what is causing a certain problem or engine function. Many
times there are other contributing factors that are forgotten or not mentioned that could have a direct bearing on what might have happened with an engine. The person or persons on the scene are best able to compare all the facts, look at the parts or other information and determine why a particular phenomenon or engine function has occurred. Therefore, we are not in a position to make failure analysis or troubleshoot engine problems by email and suggest you consult with the nearest Cummins service provider for a more accurate assessment of the situation.

Thank you for choosing Cummins power or products. Please let us know if you need assistance in locating the nearest Cummins-authorized distributor or dealer. Please feel free to use our International Dealer Locator: http://www.cummins.com/partserv/intro.html).

Now, if we can get Geno's Garage to stock these filter's we'll be in good shape. Presently I have an LF3352 on my truck and I have one more spare. I'm going to use it unless I can find the new filter in which case I'll keep it for emergencies.

What was the problem with the 3552 filter? Don't the 24 valve engines use the same one as the 12 valve engines? I have been using the 3552 on a 96 12V with no problem

You will be just fine using it on your 12V engine. The 24V engine evidently works at higher oil pressure levels and the filter case wasn't strong enough. Over time and extended use there could be problems. That's as I understand it. Any clarifications out there? I think I could probably continue to use the 3352 as long as it was changed every 3K miles, but why take a chance.

John, Try your friendly Dodge Dealer and purchase part #5016 547AA. This is the new and approved filter for the 24 valve, and all other engines. $8. 50 ea

I talked to my local Cummins dealer where I had been GIVEN a case of LF3552's during my low power dilemma sometime back... they called to invite me to a rally/BBQ on Sept 9/99. They also said that the LF3885 is not in stock yet but will trade the obsolete ones when they get them... the service mgr said it is ok to use the LF3553 until the LF3885's come in... contrary to what their bulletin was! The Dodge dealer I buy my trucks from has not got the replacement filters either. My truck is due for an oil change now... so I guess I will put another LF3553 on.

Have your dealer order you the new MOPAR filter, I did and they got them in a couple of days. Plus he thanked me for the advanced information. My dealer ordered 12 so if your dealer can't get any maby I can get one for you. unless you not that worried about using the other filter.

Thanks for the offer Don... I faxed the bulletin to my dealer and he has been back ordered... I'll wait and see if they get some by Friday... otherwise I'll put the old style on til they come in.

I just received the Fleetguard LF3894 StrataPore oil filters I ordered over a month ago. The LF3894s superseded the LF3806 StrataPore oil filters. The LF3349 (standard, cellulose media), LF3552 (MicroGlass media) and the LF3806 (StrataPore media) filters had the weaker case design which was found to be problematic in some ISBs (24v). The LF3349 has been superseded by the LF3385, the LF3552 and the LF3806 have been superseded by the LF3894, both of which have the new (heavy-duty) case design. ANY of these filters are still OK to use in the 12v engines.

BTW, the LF3894 filter actually weighs enough more than the LF3806 it replaced, that you can feel it by holding one of each, in each hand.

I've been using the LF3552's for about a year with no problem. I've not seen any leakage or abnormal distortion of the filter...
