Funny Pulling Story

Fuel shut off sol. install..did I miss something?

Been in the GAME for only a few weeks. From what I've experienced so far this Cummins is nothing less than AWESOME! Picked up a bone stock 94 w/ splitter. Averaged 13. 5 pulling a 3k# stock trailer w/ 1 horse & 2 500# llamas over the Divide. I THOUGHT that was good! After following the advice on this forum I KILLED ALL nine cat lives. It was gruesome. Murdered muffler in process! Call police! Slipped in a KN w/ prefilter. Mileage jumped to 17. 5 over same terrain w/ same load. Road trip to a windy Wyoming @ 85mph & got a tad under 20mpg! Rpm's were always between 2200-2500. Understand this is not the most fuel efficient range, so there might be even more mpg to be had? Rebel r u listening? 1) For all the muffled #ad
ON'T BE AFRAID a straight pipe is NOT too loud. Cruising it is virtually unnoticeable! It is a tad loud w/ the TSR removed. Mine fell back in for that perfect throaty unobtrusive sound. 2) Need advice on the de-fueling that starts @ 2250rpm. I would like to push this up to 2700-2900 for better shifting in mtns. Other than spending $300 for a spring kit what else can I do? Understand the 97's de-fuel @ 2900? Any parts to had there from DC? Any Cummins performance shops in Denver area? 3) I am UNSETTLED by reports that by adding a TST plate will not be kind to the Gear Vendor. Power is good empty (can leave in cruise in Double OD going up Divide) but I still want more POWER so I can do that pulling. Am aware of the problematic 5th gear problem. Not sure if I should do the full Std Trans fix 1st or wait till it breaks. Thanks for ALL the advice PAST & FUTURE. This is a KILLER site & was a major influence in my purchase. After I'm done w/ my "BOMB"ing I'll have 1 most important trip to make: Off to my brothers house where a 2000 PowerChoke sits in the driveway!

94 2500HD 5sp 4. 10LSD w/GearVendor OD,TSR fell back in after K&N installed w/ pre-filter,Killed Cat w/ 9 lives & murdered muffler in process. 119,000 miles.

<font color=blue>Only way to increase the RPM's is the Gov Spring kit on the 12v. Be happy you have a 12v, if someone will figure out how to raise the RPM limit on a 24 valve they will be wealthy!

Any takers? #ad

mikepvg:

Welcome to the TDR Website! I am glad
to hear you are happy with your 94 CTD!

Mike I am by no means an "expert" on
these trucks but have done some
"BOMBING" on my 96'. Like you, I am
still learning about alot of it. But
I will try to answer some of your
questions to the best of my knowledge
using my truck as an "example. "
Hopefully, some of the other 12 Valvers
like "Koa Man", Joe Donnelly, Piers,
MDW, HEMI and others will help too.

Question #2- The "defueling" you stated
that starts "around 2250" is the P7100
pump beginning to cut fuel off to the
engine via the governor. You can raise
that "governor speed" by installing the
governor spring kit. I just had this kit
installed in my truck and it now will
rev up to 3400 RPM! This kit widens the
power band Mike. If you install this kit
you should also put in the AFC spring kit
with it. This kit will help you control
the smoke.

3. ) I don't have a "Gear Vendors OD" so
I can't advise you on whether a TST plate
will hurt your OD. I have

and HAD a #5
TST plate at the time all my modificat-
ions were done. The cam plate is and will
be the FIRST thing usually recommended for
these trucks.

I would HIGHLY recommend the 370 Diamond
B Marine Injectors from Bosch for the
truck also. They really wake these 5. 9's
up!

If you are looking for "an order of
install" here is how I did mine:

1. ) TST Plate
2. ) Transmission upgrades
3. ) 370 injs. ,gov. sprg. kit,AFC sprg. kit

You are already aware of the 5th gear
nut problems so I won't go into that.
Check the "12 Valve Archives" on that.
Alot of the members have posted on it.

I hope this has helped you Mike!
Please e-mail me if you need any-
thing else. There is an awful lot
that can be done to "BOMB" these
trucks, from "mild" to "wild!" I
think that I am somewhere "in the
middle. "

Take care and good luck!

mikepvg, unfortunately the alternative is much more expensive. Bosch changed the cams in the pumps so they would deliver fuel longer. This would not get you as for as the gov spring kit. The cams are at least twice as much as the gov kit, if not more.

Hmmmmmm, done killed the kitty cat and lost the muffler. Doing 85mph on a road trip and wants more power. Yep, sounds like you're gonna fit in just fine around here. #ad

mikepvg, Glad to hear your return road trip was a safe-one. Enjoyed your visit, and welcome to the TDR. You might consider getting some gauges installed before you start your bombing mission. BTW 20 MPG at 85mph is way cool! #ad

1997 2500 Ext Cab 4X4,5 spd,Pac brake,Rancho 9000's,Centerforce clutch,K&N airfilter,Missing Cat,Isspro gauges,and soon a #11 plate.

Mike, please put gages on so that you can tell what you are doing to that beauty. I was shocked at how fast my exhaust gases climbed into the red zone and dats a no no. Stephen's 95 won ton dually in Sanger CA.

yep, guages are always the first thing I recomend, better safe than sorry. If your doing the govenor kit and only want a 60 or so hp gain, slide the plate all the way forward, Otherwise buy a plate and you get what you pay for.

Thanks for all excellent advise. I'm so happy w/ the Cummins its pathetic. But hey what other motor could I buy used w/ 118k on the clock & feel like I'm getting a like new product that happens to be running like a swiss watch? I think gauges & small increments in performance until I can get more feedback from others equipped w/ a GV OD before I go BIG BOMBing. Can I maintain my excellent fuel consumption if I slide the stk plate all the way fwd? Seems like getting 60 FREE hp from a simple adjustment is a good 1st step. Any feedback on how any of the suggested mods affect mpg is of great importance. Power AND good mpg is THE GOAL.

something to keep in mind about diesels, as you go down the road at say 70mph you use a specific amount of fuel to do that, it doesn't matter if you have 600 hp or 200 hp it takes the same. If you increase the efficiancy of the motor, exhaust, intake and so-on that is how you increase mileage or by slowing the rpms down like the overdrive you have. Slideing the stock plate forward gives you more top end power, if you want more cut the tabs on the adjuster for another 20 or so when its adjusted to 1/16" from the front of the opening. If you notice when you do this the plate(afc) you take off has adjustments to, the farther you slide this forward the more bottome end before boost you'll have, ie more smoke. The only way this affects mileage is by you putting your foot in it more cause you can. LOL
