On my way from Indy to Daytona I had some days to kill and after the tour at the Brickyard and seeing the Cummins race car and all the raceing history the Cummins has in Indy I decided to visit them in Coloumbus Indiana. I pulled into their Signiture engine plant at about 7am and was promptly greeted by the security gaurd(a perfect gentleman) in the main lobby. He called a lady named Cindy and in about 10 minutes this big ol dude named Bear came strolling out of the office section and informs me that they don't have tours anymore but it was Monday and what the heck. Bear could build, engineer, test etc. every aspect of the assy. process. The entire state of the art facility is built around the 1918?? Cummins house. There is as much history and pride in that factory as you will find anywhere. You open a door from one of the assy and or manufactureing locations and you could be in the root cellar of the orig. building. I was privilaged enough to go through the breakin cycle in the test cell on a Signiture engine. They are run for approx 22 minutes with programed loads to ck for everything, you name it they checked it and they ran it well past what it was being built to spec's wise. We were inches from that thing. You can feel that power it was a sensory thing, the smell, sound, feel, and looking at it what can I say, you had to be there. We went to engine factory where our engines are built(I love my engine but this plant was mundane compared to the med engine plant) They were very nice and did a great job of makeing me feel at home. They are working on a new engine for us. The lady at the little engine factory said that DC is their TUFFEST cust. (in a good way). I like that they have high standards. I am more pleased now than before on my truck choice. Even HD could learn a thing or two from Cummins. These people are building some of the finest diesel engines in the world bar none. I enjoyed this as much as anything I have done before. The Lynchburg tour had nothing on Cummins. They run our engines for 2 minutes, each and everyone. Anyway if you are ever in the area and Bear has the time you will have a true adventure. I rcommend seeing all the Cummins facilities. The main HQ is full of goodies, exploded(cut away) view of an engine strung on cables, never saw anything like it, the Humm'nCummins, plus a ton more. I'm rambl'n thinking about it. I was treated like a KING and I would like to thank all the people at Cummins.
