I own a 1990 dodge Cummins turbo diesel and there is a leak coming from the VE pump from the seal closest to the rear of the truck. I want to know if I have to take the entire pump off to replace it, and if I’d have to set the timing on it. And if I have to take it off how to reset timing and such. This was my dads truck and he died of cancer and I’m trying to get this truck into tip top shape, I’m only 17 but I’ve saved a lot of money to get everything I need, and any tips, info, videos, pictures, anything would be much appreciated. Also if I need any specific tools and everything. I just hope I can get someone to help me out here I don’t want to mess with the engine and I don’t know how much it would cost to have somebody work on it. Thank you

My pump rebuild cost $1200.00. "Diesel Injection Service" in San Bernardino, southern California. I didn't notice where you live. My condolences for your loss. I encourage you to keep you truck, maintain to the best of your ability. Y'all gonna need professional assistance sometimes. Been driving mine 18-years, happy to start her up, daily. Ideas to keep going till you find a great shop and the money, (credit card). Uh, think the purpose of a diaper? If you can attach a synthetic car drying towel or piece of chamois around the are of the leak that can safely stay in place that you can 'change-out' as needed to BUY you time and keep driving. Remember safety, y'all don't wanna start a fire. Blessings in all you pursue, work hard, however smart, have FUN. Patrick

Im sorry for your loss man, but I greatly respect what your trying to do with your dads old truck! I am currently in the process of getting my VE pump resealed as well, but I'm from Wisconsin so it's pretty cold and my truck started every single time, even since my pump has started leaking. Now since I'm not near the truck I have to have people back home work on it for me. I know my way around a Cummins with that pump pretty well, so if there is any help that I can offer you let me know. If I cannot give you the answer, I will do my best to get it for you. Good luck on your project bossman!

The gasket and seal kit for my 93 VE is a Bosch DGK 121. I did a throttle shaft seal with the pump in place. It was tedious but not bad. If the pump comes off you'd probably have to time it which does require some special tools. In a pinch, you could carefully mark it and reinstall to your marks. good luck with the project!

Yeah so I have a leak in the seal closest to the cab of the truck I am not sure if I have to take the whole pump off to reach it or if I can bypass some trouble and just take the back part off

Hi Billy - Can you get a picture of where it's leaking? Sounds like it may just be the timing plug?
