Just out of curiosity's sake, what would happen if you completely un-hooked both of the batteries in our trucks and let them sit a while? A buddy of my with an Ford F-1sissy disconnected his battery overnight and it reset his electronic odometer. You can imagine his shock!:--) I would really hate for this to happen unwittingly to my truck during a battery change. If it would reset our odometers, would it also reset the overhead trip computer as well? GOLLY!

I understand the self contained backup battery for the odo and some trouble codes is good for 10 years constant use. Don't know about the trip comp. No such luck selling that five year 12k mile Ram. I've seen devices you can buy or easily make that use a 9v transistor battery and a cig lighter adaptor to keep things going when the batteries are disconnected. Will keep all your trouble codes, radio presets and alarm codes.

i have disconnected my batteries before to clear engine diagonastic codes for my disab... er,, malfunctioning egr system on my 6. 5td. but it has never lost the radio presets or odo/trip reading

Unhooked the batts on the 99 for the injector install and the Trip OD and Radio presets did get cleared. Disconnect time was 2. 5 hours. The OD Miles I thought where stored on a chip and didn't need a battery.

At least for the '98, the Trip OD is stored only in the instrument cluster. Thus when power is removed, the trip mileage is forgotten.

The total mileage OD setting is stored in the PCM, I believe in non-volatile memory (NVRAM) which doesn't need power to retain its settings.
