Hey, Just had the 53 block replaced and I have a new clutch in... sweet huh?

Well I now have a annoying problem with my 6 speed... My 5th gear is clashing badly. If I do a speed shift I can get it into gear very well. . I also do not "feel" the synchros. . the resistance I feel that prevents the clash...

I hear that the 5600 is not produced anymore and parts for rebuild are near impossible to find...

The new trucks have the Mercedes 6 speed manual... . is this able to go in the 2nd gen trucks as a replacement for the 5600? I have the NV271 transfer case.

If there is anyone to rebuild the 5600, how much would it cost? Parts and Labor... .

Going to need this sometime this year ...

NV 5600 parts almost non existant my 5600 in a 2000 just went down with bad syncro. Mine is the 1st generation of 5600 with 1. 25" input shaft, parts for this trans through dealership, or any other vendor are not available. I found 3 new trans through DC for around $4500 a reman through bluminthaw for $3200. I think in 01 was the 2nd generation 5600 with the larger input shaft. Parts I believe are scarce or also non-existant as well. Don't no what to tell you as far as price to repair but I would check around for the syncronizers now. Bearings are available and a few of the gears. If you can get your trans rebuilt Bluminthaw recommended over filling by one quart since the rear syncronizer is failing due to oil starvation.

anybody know if the G56 will go on my 01 HO? I have the NV271 Transfer like there is supposed to be in the new trucks...

Eric,

I had the NV-5600 in my '01 rebuilt by Standard Transmission and Gear in Fort Worth, TX about two months ago while waiting for my new truck to be delivered. (My son-in-law and daughter were waiting to purchase the '01 so I had it rebuilt and rebuilt correctly)

I strongly recommend Standard Transmission. They treated me very well and fairly. I delivered the truck to them early one morning and camped out in a nearby cheap motel. The truck was handed back to me at the end of the second day. They had a driver and shop truck run me and my German Shepherd companion back and forth between their shop and the motel. After the transmission was disassembled and vat cleaned they picked me up and brought me back to the shop for a "show and tell" then delivered us back to the motel after the decisions were made. The rebuilder was very knowledgeable and generous with his time slowly explaining and showing me what should be replaced.

My truck had a little over 300k miles at the time with lots of heavy (commercial) towing history. The mainshaft and sixth gear were worn, a large roller bearing assembly was rough, the synchro drum was worn, and the clutch disc and flywheel were hotspotted (3. 54 gears). Standard presented me with several options and I chose to replace everything needed. Then they offered to charge me only for the parts mine needed but immediately install another unit that had just been rebuilt and was sitting on the floor because they understood I was an RV transporter and wanted to get back on the road, not hang around another day waiting for mine to be built. They charged me for a new mainshaft and the case seals at each end of the shaft, the sixth gear, the roller bearing assembly, and the synchro drum plus a new clutch pressure plate and disc, new throwout bearing, and pilot shaft bushing. They only charged me for the parts actually needed for my unit. The price including all parts, labor, fluids, shop miscellaneous charges, was less than $1900. If my transmission had required everything, a complete rebuild, the price would have only been $2450 plus the clutch parts.

Standard gave me a 36 month 36k mile warranty in writing and I left smiling. I pulled trailers for another month or so with it and finally handed it over to my daughter and son-in-law with 322k on the clock. The rebuilt transmission worked like new and actually shifted better than the original one when new.

My understanding was that Standard purchased a large quantity of NV-5600 parts and can continue to rebuild them for the near future. I don't know, they could have run out already. I would call them if I were you. They are TDR advertisers.

You could pull your transmission yourself and ship it to them, have a local shop in your area do the r and r, or simply drive the truck to Fort Worth.

If Standard has the parts I promise you you will not go wrong with them.

I had mine rebuilt by a local shop, and I'm on my 3rd month waiting for it, and it's on it's 2nd rebuild.

It started with a clutch I broke, and all I wanted was the bigger input shaft so I could put a dual disc. "They" rebuilt it, and gave it back to me. I made it across town, and 4th gear had 0 synchro action. Grinding anytime I didn't catch the gear perfect. Now, it's getting rebuilt again, and I'm at 3 months, and still waiting...

Have a reputable compnay rebuild it. Blumenthal is great, Standard trans is great, just don't go "backyard". You'll regret it to no end.

I have an appointment with a place locally called "six states dist" (not driving to ft worth, sorry... )..... they rebuild within a week and since I drive big truck during the week, they have all that time to do it.

Since the 5600 is not made anymore, and I don't plan on getting a new truck anytime soon with the new rebuilt engine I have, I might have them do a bearing and synchro job and replace any gears that are needed... . I know I will need an input shaft as well from a pilot bearing that went out a while ago and bought a new clutch... . so now I need the transmission rebuilt and everything will be good once again.

Will do! I also bought the fast coolers from Genos... this adds a quart capacity and helps cool it. going to still have them overfill it by 1 quart for the rar beaing starvation situation... . Using the redline MTL fluid... . Doing this on the 19th so check back around the 4th of july... .

OK, how are you overfilling the transmission??

I assume pulling the shifter tower off???

I'm thinking I might drill the stock drain plug and tap it to 1/8NPT... then I can add a street ell and extension pipe to fill it past the "full" point...

I actually got a full 5 quarts in it last night... took some work, but I did it...

just fill it normally, then plug it, then jack up the left side or run it up on a curb on the left side and add 1 more...

The adding of an extra quart is almost common knoledge for the rear bearing starvation problem... . a lot of places do it.

Eric -

Enjoy reading your posts and sorry to hear about all of the work you have had to do as of late. I believe you have mentioned Ken Jones in the past (can't remember for sure) but would this be something up his alley?? I was very pleased with the help he provided me - comp, clutch, manifold. I also have had friends work with Standard Transmition and they were satisified.

I would like to know more about the shop that you mentioned above and your experience. As I will be back home (wyoming) in a couple years, it is always good to know of "local" places that do good work.

Thanks!

Good luck.

Eric I was not aware of it and im on here alot. I just checked my inventory and have almost a hole quart, and am adding it in the am before the truck roles again.

Yeah, I'll probably add another quart when I get home tomorrow... at least I have a place to do it...

And while I have heard of overfilling the Getrag and the G56, I have never heard of overfilling the NV5600 before either...

The place where I had the engine rebuilt, actually they sent the block to a machine shop, then they built up the block and installed it... . was Davies Motor Co. ... I am on my pocket PC right now and don't have the number but they are in springville, ut. super nice guys to talk to and you can always get the owner or the mechanic working on it... the place is like a junkyard with old trucks strewn around but they do good work... they are not too fast as other drive in small repairs come in all the time so this took a month to do.....

Davies used the Six states dist to try to replace my input shaft but they did not know what was all involved with it so I am going on Davies recommendation to use them... there is a SLC shop of that name and that is where I am having the work done... . they seem confident in their work and the estimate of like 4 days to get it done...

When I put new fluid in one time, I was told to stuff as much as I could into it ... . even jacking it up a little on the side so it was overfull... . this was like 2 years ago...
