I am up here in New York since this past June, and after this winter, my 2001 sport model painted rear bumper is starting to rust pretty good. Never a problem in TX for obvious reasons, but I figure I need to do something about this. Unlike in TX, there are no Ranch Hand or other dealers in the area. I have a Frontier Gear front end replacement I really like, and would like to do a black diamond plate rear bumper. I have access to metal fabrication tools, so building one myself would be easy if I had a good design to work off or or start with. Just wondering if anyone has done this themselves and is happy with the results. If you are willing to share the plans, even better. I am in the Army, so no need to worry that I am going into business or something doing this. Plan is to make just one of them. The few shops I have found near where I live(north of NYC) that could even possibly get one of these wants as much to ship it as the thing costs! Plus, I think it would be a fun project.

Thanks!

Jon

I'm going to try to attach a picture or two... never tried this on the TDR before... let's see:

I bought all the materials from a place called 4x4iron that I'm pretty sure no longer exists. They used to be at 4x4iron.com. Google that name and you'll get some hits from some K5 Blazer sites and you can see some others. The cool thing about 4x4iron was that they just sold the parts and the customer welded everything up themselves. You could get as much or as little as you wanted. I had to make some slight modifications that would have been a big pain without my buddy's plasma cutter.

The bumper is essentially an 8" x 3" piece of channel that was cut so that the ends are thinner (higher off the ground). The mid section is 8". Each side has a heavy duty trailer spindle welded into the top. One side is for a swinging spare tire carrier and the other holds two 20L fuel cans and a High Lift jack. I copied their 0. 25" brackets with 0. 5" steel so I could feel better about towing with the integrated receiver tube. I also cut holes in the back face and mounted two rubber housing Hella tractor lights inside. I thought about powder coating it, but the black Rustoleum is still looking good.

Nice work Clinton, I have been thinking of this type of thing myself. The thought of getting it covered in Line-X crossed my mind.

I recently started to learn to weld and did a front bumper for the truck next will be a rear. I have alot of ideas I gathered by looking at alot of other $$$ bumpers on the market and sorta picked and choosed what I liked about them and what I really would use it for. I'm going to attempt to make one that has a beefed reciever built in it as well as recovery or pull points. the good thing is there is alot of room really depends on what you want. plate style with box tubing or round stock. can really flash it up with diamond plate. I have seen some that build a built in storage compartment. again this is all due to what you are going to want and possible use it for. I as well was in the military and you can really appreciate some of the stuff that is on these. so some of my thoughts resort back to alot of the motor trans to mech, assault vehicles:-laf. also think of weight and possible approach angle. if you look at my front bumper I did I think I was leaning allittle on a LAV just smaller:-laf kidding. Google Image Result for http://upload. wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/LAV-25_Thailand. JPEG just get the grinder cutters and welder out and couple bud's and go to town. good luck

I just finished a rear bumper and am now starting on a new front bumper. $322 bucks for a 4x10 sheet of 3/16" and a little time. Beats $1600 or more for an aftermarket one!

Google has a free CAD program called Sketch UP that you can download. I used that to design the bumpers. Dimensions can manually be pulled off of the design for making your cuts. There are some third-party add-ons that are supposed to print out complete cut lists for you but I haven't been able to make those work yet. But Sketch Up will allow you to play around with your design and save alot of mis-cut steel.

I'll see if I can attach a jpg of the designs...

Thanks Mark, I'll send you a PM, I look forward to when you have pics your bumpers mounted on your truck, it'll look real good.

Thanks for the info so far. Been busy at work and have not gotten to check this in a few days. Kenny61, I am at West Point, about an hour north of NYC.

Some cool designs for sure!
