I have a 02 2500 six speed and it seems like my truck is running out of fuel every now and then. It doesnt seem to matter what temp it is outside but it has been happening from 25 degrees to 60 degrees outside. It also doesnt matter if the truck is cold or fully warmed up. I will accelerate from a dead stop and it may or may not do it but if im running 60 mph or so and go to accelerate it sometimes just dies out as if it is running out of fuel,it will starve for a second or so then it will take back off then starve again a second or two later. It will sometimes go a couple of days with out hesitating then all of a sudden it will start again. Ive already changed the fuel filter and added some anti-gel additive to the tank but that didnt help at all. Is there another filter inline somewhere that could be stopping up or does it sound like a lift pump problem? I have recently added a Edge products Comp box but i was having this problem previous to that. If anyone has had a similar problem or might know of a good direction to look in i would appreciate your help.

Welcome to the TDR! Too bad it had to be under these circumstances. Your question should probably have gone in the 2nd generation forum. Fortunately, many of us here have a lot of experience with the "old" ones.

I'd say it's probably a bad fuel transfer (aka: lift) pump. Chances are it has been bad for a while. The Bosch injection pump is able to draw fuel from the tank by itself, but just barely, and it's very taxing on it. Fueling boxes will push it over the edge real fast (if it's going to go bad, it will almost immediately). I've also heard once the Bosch is worked to this point, its life is quite shortened.

You should disconnect the box immediately, and get a gage on your fuel pressure. The lift pump is inexpensive and easy to change, but it may be too late. This would have been a simple warranty fix, but your box should void coverage for this, depending on your dealer. You're probably just as well off to change it yourself, and hope for the best on the Bosch pump (they could deny any and all future warranty claims over this).

Sounds lousy, but as they say, you've gotta pay to play. Be sure to spend a bunch of time reading the 2nd generation forums.

Good luck!
