First snow fall of the season up here this weekend. Engaged 4 wheel drive and heard a bit of grinding. I know the fluid level in the front diff, transfer case and transmission is okay. I did check the ujoints as I had a sound similar to this before I found a ujoint on the rear drive shaft that needed attention.

I changed oil on the motor 1 week ago and my routine is to shake or move anything I can under the truck. I could feel something in the front driveshaft but didn't check any further for lack of time. I checked more closely today and found an ever so slight movement in the CV joint. Should the CV be solid? Can a cross in the CV joint be replaced or does the whole CV joint need to be replaced?

Thanks.

Stan

I don't think you should have any movement (if shaking it by hand) in that joint. It shouldn't be too much to have it replaced at a shop. I can't say how much as I paid $175 to rebuild both front and rear driveshafts with all new joints.

What about the u-joints on the axle shafts? Have you checked them too?
