The good news is I found the problem with my engine knock. The bad news is that the two front ears on my clinder head where the exhaust manifold bolts up are cracked. Does anyone know if this can be repaired or do I need a new head? HELP

Piers has had this problem. Ask him how well the repairs did for him; I don't know. That's why he and I went to the ATS exhaust manifold. The stocker shrinks too much from heat until it either breaks the bolts or the ears on the head.

Joe, I was just gonna say that Piers had that happen to him during one of Mike's (Auto Wurks Diesel) trips out that way and he had it welded and it's okay now.

I sent Piers an E-mail for repair info. Anyone have any experience welding cast iron? I wonder if it can be done on the truck or if I should pulling the head now? One thing for certain, looks like I need a new exhaust manifold from Santa since the old one shrank up so much. Who has the best price for the ATS manifold?

Yep had that happen to me twice, first time truck was under warranty so head was replaced. Second time I had bombed my truck and therefore was my own warranty station. I sent you an e-mail covering the repair procedure... you already know what the cause is. If you do end up replacing the head I would stongly recomend porting the new one

Thanks for the help Piers and everybody. Yep, I am my own warranty station. I didn't even consider getting the work done under warranty. I'll get a welding outfit over here and do the work on the truck. Thanks again.

Don't want to complain & haven't had the problem. But I have share'd for all eye's to read the simple ,cost effective cure for 5th gear nut & pilot shaft failure and a product for the cure, where it can be bought from the mfg (no mark-up). Shair with all.
Will say the big rigs have had the same trouble for years.
Had a mech. (now called Tech's)remove a manifold once from a L-10 for a blowen gskt. and after a while of hearing him cusing i went over to see what the trouble was, cant get the thing back on,is to short, cant get last bolt hole to line up,was the responce.
A few things to know here, the unit was to be cycled out of the fleet in two weeks, these things are not cheap,he knew there was a new one in the parts room,And unknowen to me at the time he had been too the back room to the head mech,(Only did the big jobs)-and his advice was the same as mine--- If it came off it will go back on!!
I wanted him to use his head for something other than a hat rack. After claimed to build his owe'n race eng's & complete car an was high in points at years end. A Walk in the park!
To cut the story short an hour later i had to tell him to get a drill bit 2/64's larger than the holes in the manifold, redrill them and move on. Know the guy that bought rig 6 years ago has done an over haul and still has the same manifold.
Two days after this i heard the owner (2'nd gen) was going to make him the 1st shift foreman
over 4 other better choice's (guess the other's should have had a race car to let the son's take around the trac) With that i shook my head ,got my basket ball and when home. .
Back to the topic, for those that have nothing to do next weekend maybe pick up new gaskets and a drill bit and modify. Or buy a early x-mas (different) present. Manifold.

I welded up my cylinder head today out at my Dad's place. We used some high dollar nickel alloy rod and it looks good. Installed the ATS manifold at the same time. Should the new exhaust gaskets be retorqued after they have been torqued cold at assembly? I have it in the garage after a 40 mile drive so everything has been through one heat cycle.

I torque them all to spec, give them a couple minutes and go around and retorque them. Surprisingly, they do stretch and some need the retorquing.
