From what I have heard the D-Max has a VGT Turbo. Could it be adapted to the Cummins? It seems some guys are getting alot of HP from the D-Max with the stock turbo and being a VGT it would cut down on lag.

We had a market segment update meeting at work today and the Cummins factory guy was talking about the ISBe VGT model, I think he said 250 horse and up got the VGT, I'll have to double check tomorrow, I left the notebook in my toolbox.

Actually, Banks has a prototype right now of the Garrett VGT turbo (same one as used on Duramax and 6. 0l PSD) mounted to the Cummins 600. Thing is, you also have to have a computer for the turbo to control when the vanes open and how much. Not sure if Banks is going to produce it for sale or not and I don't know how much of a difference it makes. They did the install on Extreme 4x4 a couple months ago. Personally, I don't like them. It's just more stuff to go wrong and I can't imagine them being very cheap. But, if I had to have one, I'd rather use the Holset version of the VGT. Fewer moving parts than the Garrett which should make it more reliable.

jlaisch, I agree. The variable nozzle design on the current ISX turbo has been pretty flawless. Apparently it works well enough that both Detroit and Volvo are using the Holset turbos for their 07 engines!

I think the ATS Aurora MST is a neat design for a VGT. Not for sale yet.

i like that design too... and it is simple to control... just basically a WG actuator on the valve on it... i suppose it would need an external WG though to prevent overspeed of the turbo too...

if the dmax has the same turbo as the 6. 0ps I wouldn't touch it. Way too many failures

I agree. My F450 turbo said adios at 25k miles. Mild weather, no idling, nothing out of the ordinary. Not too impressed w/ the PSD

Is the DMAX turbo water cooled?

Yes.

I am still looking at replacing the cartridge on the HX with a marine cartridge and using the capped heat exchanger lines to cool it.

Just unsure on how much extra heat it would add to an already taxed cooling system?

how about plumbing an external cooler in the circuit with the charger... like coolent line off head into aux. cooler and then into charger center section then into return??? or have the aux cooler after the charger then into cooling system??? something like a universal transmission cooler as the cooler core.

That's what is so strange. It seems the 6. 0ls turbos have been failing left and right, yet I don't hear of any Duramax turbo failures.

they don't have the heui system which is hard on lube oil, and they don't have the problems with fuel dilution as many 6. 0's have... there was one post over on the diesel stop where someone posted saying their dealer said it was normal to have 10% fuel dilution :eek::eek::rolleyes:
