MGM. . took a minute but I got it

Tom keep us posted on the new clutch as this looks like a great alternative to the McLeod price monster

hehehhee
Speaking of a dual disc Mclod...
Did you know if you take a twin turbo 1 ton Cummins, wind it out to 2500 rpm and dump the clutch in 3rd, it slips? Let me rephrase that, it had no intentions whatsoever of holding. 0.
How are you supposed to drive if it won't handle that? #ad

McLod? the only clod around here is MGM. I enjoyed the ride in Dave's monster dually, totally extreme ! Tach at 4000, all gauges way off the scale, 5th gear nut stripped off, and fish-tailing all the way up to over 120mph (in 4th gear), not once but several times. Lots of old fuddy duddies in Crown Vics and Caddies got passed ... . INSTANTLY. Passing with oncoming traffic 500 feet up the road is definitely not a problem in that truck. That was with 4 people in the truck, and some old iron in the back...
We all had a serious case of the "speed giggles" the rest of the day. I'm still laughing. If he can do this with a street truck, just think what the white monster has in it.

Thanks for the clarification on the clutch install tricks. Buy the way it looks like I misspelled your name thanks to MGM it looks like I have it straight now, it wasn't on purpose.

Blair, I was just yanking your chain, MGM caught me on it. It was just too funny not to do it, popped into my head on the spur of the moment ! #ad
I think I did the same thing to your partner HVAC, months ago, LOL. No disrespect intended, I get carried away with the jokes & pranks sometimes...
Update: stomped the skinny pedal tonight, at 55 in 5th gear, the back end stepped out like a Corvette, then the tires gripped, and it launched like a Saturn V ! Clutch didn't slip. The real test will be while pulling a load, it's going to be a few weeks before I do that. I'll report back on it then.

Ordered my new D. R. E. Sachs (Donnelly Re-Engineered) from Joe Donnelly, and took it up to Dave Mitchell's garage in Thornville, Ohio to get it installed. Stack'd & Jack'd, MGM, and Johnboy3 all drove over to hang out, we had a good time yakking with Dave about clutches and HP.
The clutch is holding, even though it is not broken in yet( 500 mile stop & go break-in strongly suggested by Joe), we all tried, and were unable to make it slip, and that's with DD stage 3's & a PowerEdge set to level 3. It wouldn't slip even with 4x4 engaged on dry pavement. After I put on my Hx40, we will see if it handles the added torque/power. I'm sure it will. And then, I'll see if it can pull my new 5th wheel RV! Thanks, Joe !
And a BIG thumbs-up to the people at Enterprise Engine, customer care is a HIGH priority to them, and they know their stuff. The Sachs is not new to them, but the installation requirements had 2 or 3 details they don't use when installing McLeod or Mitchell clutches or the old stock Sachs clutch, yet, they asked all the right questions and took care to get it done right. They have a lot of little tricks for clutches/flywheels, and horsepower, things that would escape the attention of most mechanics.
It was a four hour trip for me, but I have to say if it had been a 2 day trip, it still would have been worth it!
Thanks, Dave, Loretta, and Doug for answering my questions, and thanks, Chad, for a great job on the install !

Hey Brian you mention 2 or 3 new details when installing the new clutch. Are these something different from the special details needed while installing the DRE clutch or is something special? Is this something you can share, always nice to know something new. I'm sure Dave has done more than his fare share of clutches and probably knows a trick or 2.

Blain, the 2 or 3 details I was talking about are the written recommendations of Joe Donnelly, that he sends along when you buy the clutch. Follow them. One of those details Dave Mitchell regarded as important, was surfacing the flywheel with a blanchard type stone. He has a different surfacing method for McLeod or Mitchell-modified clutches.
As for the rest, there's a lot of good stuff he's not telling me, but one thing they did do was machine out my flywheel center to put in a big rig-style roller bearing, instead of the little bitty stock needle bearing. One mechanic there said it was overkill and unnecessary, his truck doesn't have it. Extra insurance for me, that's all, as a robotics/automation mechanic, I deal with bearings and bushings on a daily basis, there's no such thing as overkill when it comes to bearings. I've never seen one that lasted, no matter what. The idea on the flywheel bearing was not mine, but Dave's.

Briar, how does the pedal effort compare to stock? Does it disengage cleanly and allow smooth gear changes? Any transmission noises or driveline vibes?

What's this 120+ in 4th gear story? Last time I heard it it was only 110 in 4th #ad

Isn't the McLeod cheaper? (than the brass Sachs. )

No,the McCleod is 200 bucks more than the brass puck Sachs. The only time the McCleod was the same price was the brief time it was on the group special.

Vaughn, the clutch pedal feel is just as Joe Donnelly described it, in his post on the thread started by MGM, "New Sachs Users... " He wrote one or two posts on there that were powerfully accurate, they simply fit in with everything I've experienced so far ! Everybody should read what he has to say, carefully, he DOES know what he's talking about. I would compare the feel of the clutch to the let-off on a compound bow (for you liberals, that's that curved Indian thing the enlightened among us use for hunting), it's got more resistance to your foot until it reaches a certain point, then it gets easy. More resistance than stock, but not enough to be unpleasant.
As for my fish story, you guys are just jealous #ad
cause MGM, Johnboy3, Stack'd N' Jack'd and I got to ride with the Midwest pulling legend, the real King of the Mountain ! Exaggerations or not, that truck is EXTREME. For underhood pics, go to www.enterpriseengine.com/images/twinDM3.jpg You want fast? Go to Ohio, wave some $$$ in front of him, and sit back, they'll take care of ya. Want to do part or all of it yourself? They can help you there too.

110, 120, doesn't matter. We was flyin! #ad

The fifth gear nut was the replacement kit, cranked on there, only problem was we were accelerating past 120 mph with ~65lbs of boost and a semi pulled in front of us. When Dave hit the brakes the truck shot a nut #ad

but, that didn't slow us down!

Starting off in 2nd gear requires a lot of finesse' on the throttle, a minimum of 1500 RPM's seems to do just fine, and more than 1700 seems to be too much. At less than 1500, the truck shudders, the clutch grabs. I got irritated today, and floored the pedal, did a dually burnout on dry pavement. Oops, nothing like a bill for 6 new tires to cut into your Hx40 turbo budget !

Blair,
I went with pucks back in apirl. The first week or so it didn,t bother me at all. Then for the next month it drove me crazy. I think I was trying to hard to find that perfect release spot. Then you realize that you can,t. Now I don,t even thing about it. I don,t try and rev it up any more, just let it go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
