How do I remove and replace the carrier on my front D60 with out going to the expense of buying the spreading tool that the FSM says you need? I'm only doing this to replace the axle seals, so I just want to pop it out and get it back in without changing the settings on the ring gear.

I've heard something about using a crowbar and prying it out gently, true? But I've don't recall any thing about getting it back in.

Most carriers with some milage on them tend to fall out when you remove the bolts and caps. If they don't a little help with a pry bar will pop them out. A few gentle taps with a rubber hammer will reseat them on install.

On your replacement seals. Make sure they have the metal guide rings on them. If they don't you will wipe the seal out when you reinstall the axles.

Thanks, I'll try that. I went to two auto parts places and the seals they had did not have the cone, got 2 ordered from 4wheelparts that do have the cone.

Got the carrier out. A little prying on the ring gear bolts and a few smacks from a dead blow hammer and the carrier came out. It revealed that the bearings for the carrier were shot, not just a little bit, they looked liked like they had been sand blasted. Oh well I dont feel for paying $800. 00 for the axle from a work truck.

Replace the bearings. Do the pinion at the same time. On bearing replacement most of the time you don't need to reset the R&P. It normal will come back to the orginal settings. Or at least most of the time I have done them they did.

That good to know. I'll have to take a good look at the teeth of the R&P to make sure there in good shape before I replace all the bearings.

Thanks,

Steve
