while changing the rear ube this week I found some metal on the rear diff. cover magnet. On closer inspection I saw where a shim was working its way out on the left side of the carrier. Pulled carrier and left bearing was easy to pull off by hand. Ordered bearing/shim kit from dts and found new carrier locally but broke my homemade carrier spreader during reassembly so took the truck to local dealer[using front wheel drive:mad:] for reassembly. The service writer called me thurs. to tell me there is a safety recall on the lift pump and there will be no charge for that. So i am waiting to hear from him again as soon as they finnish my truck. anyone have any tricks on the carrier preload; or heard anything on a lift pump recall on first gens?

There is an INJECTOR pump recall on some 92s. I'd double check. There is info either here or on the DTR about which pumps are under the recall. I think it is like the first 92s up to about March92. Mom's just barely missed it with a 04/92 build date.

The D70s are known to throw a shim or two now and then. It is a hassle, but I know of no fix for it, unless you just use the minimum number of shims necessary (i. e. use a . 010" and . 008 for . 018" instead of say, three . 006" shims) to help then stay together.

Daniel is correct on the shims:

(i. e. use a . 010" and . 008 for . 018" instead of say, three . 006" shims) to help then stay together.

Gerrymander the setup till you have shims that are not less than . 006

Even better would be a single spacer that was the required thickness. (Machine shop item) Heavier applications do use such a method. Also from my experience, the ring gear side is the bearing (and bearing stub) that fails due to the significant load on that side. There has been a Dana 70 HD that has bigger bearings which help with this problem. I don't think there is a way to adapt this to our trucks.
