Dad's ISB in motor home bites the dust

My Dad called this weekend to cancel the maintence session that we had planned before his trip to Alaska. He told me that the anti-freeze he found leaking on their Mexico trip in March ended up being a cracked block and Cummins Northwest already had it out of his 35' home on wheels and would be taking the guts out of the old one and putting them back into a new block.



The tech also mentioned that it was not uncommon for his serial number and that 90% of those effected would be found in the RV industry.



Sooooo... ... ... Is it a common practice to put old rings and bearings into a new block? Just curious
 
One would only assume (there's that word again:rolleyes: )

that any mechanic worth his Snap-Ons would NEVER reuse rings and especially bearings.

The dimensions on the new block both in the cylinder bore and bearing saddles should prevent any of the old stuff from being reused.

Hopefully he won't try to reuse the oil, coolant, filters, and gaskets either!:eek:

Cracked block

At least when I ended up with a cracked block DC replaced the

short block and not a bare block.
 
Update

Talked with him again and it looks like he will get new crank & cam bearings/bushings but all the rest will come out of the original block - He assumed that new gaskets would be used. :rolleyes: It's better than it sounded the first time.



EDIT - Yes he is getting new rings - Sorry about that.

FYI,

Only the first cam journal has a bearing the rest are cast into the block and ride in an oil bath. It suprised me at first, then I thought about the million milers and decided not to sweat it.



new rings and bearings are std in a teardown. I would bet that the rings have wear barely noticable w/calipers and dial indicaors.



After 38k miles I pulled my cam for a swap that was not to be. While the cam was out it flash rusted. . no biggie. A little wd-40 and some scotchbrite cleaned it up in about 5min. The wear indications on the cam came off with the rust. I was suprised to say the least.



The cam will be 'adjusted' and swapped at a later date.



These things never cease to amaze me.

Under about 200,000, same block, it is common to reuse the 5. 9 bearings and rings, as they are not really worn yet, in most cases.



Changing blocks??



No way, DEMAND new parts, even if he has to pay for them.
