This afternoon I borrowed our little high-tech digital thermometer and a probe from work and ran some informal airbox temperature checks.
I recently installed Doug Hofeldt (aka Air Bulldog) Dam Air airdam and thought it would be fun to see how much it affected air temps plumbed up to the airbox.
Here are some results:
Test One
Ambient temp = 98F
Inlet: Dam Air + Fender snorkel
A/C: High
Temp probe in prefilter side of Airbox
Filter: Dirty Amsoil Foam filter
Idling, hot engine, 5 min: 125F
Steady 35mph in town: 100-107F
Stop & Go, heavy traffic: 105-118
Highway 60-70mph: 99-102
Test Two
Inlet: Fender snorkel only (Dam Intake blocked)
All other conditions the same
Idling, hot engine, 5 min: 137F
Steady 35mph town: 107-112
Stop & Go, heavy traffic: 110-122
Highway, 65mph: 105-107
Test Three
Inlet: Fender Snorkel blocked, Dam Inlet only
All other conditions equal
Temps were close to Test One except were elevated 1-2F.
Since I have gotten the Dam Air I haven't noticed a significant decrease in EGTs in normal driving, (maybe 25-50F), however when towing 2 snowmobiles on a flatbed (close to 2000lb) I was able to take pretty steep grades on the highway at 75mph and I maxed out at 1000F. I have an ETH with Piers 35-16. 7 turbo, ATS manifold and 5" exhaust.
