Well the transmission is out and apart on the bench... . bearing are gray but in good condition and we've got a bearing kit on order to service it..... Remember in my other post I ran my finger across the bottom of the case and came back with stuff that shouldn't be there..... But this is not the cause of the vibration that's been shaking the truck on acceleration... . coffee cup would walk off the dash... ...

I've opened the rear end and found that the plating on the bearing races on the ring gear are starting to go... . we've got those bearing off to replace them but again this is not the problem... just something we caught early... .

Remember this 04 truck now has 100K... . and pulls a large trailer...

Center u-joint is dry... . and there are wear marks on the yoke so we're going to change them with greaseable ones..... This has got to be part of the problem but really does't look what I'd call that bad.....

And we've found the clutch disc hub with excessive play... there is at least . 150" - . 180" play in the hub..... not on the input shaft but if you hold the hub you can move the carrier plate back and forth..... we clamped the hub in a big vice and pulled on the carrier plate... . To our surprise the flyweel surface is brand new and the pressure plate is good... . So it gets a new disc... . the stock pilot bearing is bad but the end of the input shaft(on transmission) is good... ... and we're putting the flywheel in the lathe to replace the pilot bearing with a real bearing..... 6203-2RS if my memory is correct. . and we'll pack that with synthetic grease we use in our HD Clutch Bearing's. The play in the hub would allow the disc to lock up off the center line of the input shaft and with each rev of the motor the disc would try and pull the input shaft into an oval instead of circle... this alone would destroy the front brearings as well as the counter shaft so I'm pleased we've caught this... . This alone could be the problem... .

The other surprise is that the friction on the disc is like new... . must be at least 80% so good I didn't take the time to measure it... but with the bad hub were going to change it... and the new pilot bearing and release bearing. .

So what I was sure was a bearing problem in the transmission turned out to be a couple of other things... . Hopefully we won't have this apart again for another 100K miles... .

jelag,

I'm in town for awhile. Who do I ask for at the shop. I would like to see the trans and a PRXB inline brake if you have one.

Richard

jelag,

Wish there were techs working at the dealerships as skilled as yourself. I'm sure there are some good ones but it's a roll of the dice when you take a vehicle in for warranty work. I have a seeping output seal on my transmission and really don't want them to do the work. Spokane is a bit far from where I'm at but have no doubt where I would take my truck if you were closer.

Thanks for taking the time to explain what you found.

Guys... . the PRXB has not been released for the Dodge... PacBrake has been putting all their effort getting the PRXB up and running for the Cats, and other small engines and I'm told that I'll see one or two of the first production for the direct mount in the Dodge... .

I've not posted pictures to this board... I'll get some taken and posted... .

Jim

Jelag,

I was wondering if you (or your drivers) only use the clutch for stopping and starting? or is it used for every shift up and down? if it did not have alot a wear on it, perhaps thats why.
