Was there a Diesel Jeep Wagoneer

Jeep Liberty Diesel...What's Up With It?

Just thought you guys might like to see this. I am a firefighter and one of the turbos on our engines took a digger. Hopefully the damage won't be much but we'll see. Have any of you guys seen anything like this? I am sure some of the shards got sucked in. It is on a Detroit 8V92.

Bummer. :( No intercooler on those, right?

On an E-7 350 we have in a CH Mack, had the turbo shaft snap, and send junk into the intercooler. Didn't hurt the engine. Was lucky on that one. Boss' brother won't let the engine cool down before shutting it off like I keep reminding him. The turbo that replaced that one only lasted 50k before the turbine side bearing/seal went out. I drive that truck now, and going on 80k on this turbo. Still feels like new. :)

I've seen a E-7 that had some valves drop when the turbo grenaded. Needed a new front head, 2 pistons, valve cover and some other goodies to fix that one. :(

Nope, no intercooler. Most fire engines that I have seen don't have intercoolers. Sometimes our engineers (driver) don't appreciate how some of these big diesels work, so they sometimes get ridden a little too hard and put away wet.

What got in to the turbo?? Something got past the air filter and hit the fins. I am sure the little pieces got in to the engine.

I don't think it was anything that got sucked in. The shaft was pretty loose so I am thinking the bearing or something else let loose and that allowed the commpressor wheel to hit the housing.

Be sure to change the air filter and take the air piping apart anyways. When turbos go they will usually cough stuff upstream, even under boost. I don't know how many 2nd turbos i've changed from people not changing filters after a failure.

Under the blower their is an innercooler that will keep the pieces out of the engine. Are you sending this out to a shop or doing the work in house?

Ken

We have a guy at a neighboring department that does all of our maintnenance and repair. That's good to hear that the intercooler may have caught the shrapnal.

Not so good news. They looked in to it more and the pieces got in to the engine and damaged it. Worst case scenario it will cost us $17k to replace/rebuild this engine.

Looks to me like something got in there. My turbo looked the same when somebody put a rock in my airfilter. (Mine was a little worse though)

KIseminger,

That photo looks identical to the turbo on our pumper equipped with a 6v92TA Detroit. The only difference is the guy's drove around for a month with it like that.

I was driving it one day (not usually assigned to that rig) and noticed it was smoking bad, sounded like crap, and had no power so I wrote a repair order on it. However, the guy's who drive it regularly said it seemed fine so I had to just about pull teeth before it was looked at. Like I said, a month later it was fixed.

Apparently there is a screen just before the blower that kept out the big pieces so they put on a new turbo and maybe a blower (not sure) and it appears OK now.

Yeah, a different shift was going to a fire and noticed it on the way there. They took themselves out of service and drove it the 10 miles or so back to the station, when it should have been towed. Hindsight is always 20/20 I guess.....

They tried replacing just the turbo and blower but no avail, looks like the screen didn't catch enough shrapnal. That sucks because my shift is in charge of maintenance and that is a big hit for us. If was only 4 months later we would have our new Pierces and it might be a bit easier to swallow.

Mmmm... Pierce :D A sign of quality!

Anyway, sure looks like a bearing went in that turbo and the compressor wheel rubbed the housing, you can see aluminum shavings, just my observation

Ok, like normal, I was wrong. That pic looks nearly identical to a pic from the Detroit Diesel Technician's Guide to Turbochargers
