Boy what is next... first it's the paint next it's the mirrors... now the damn hindge on the console lid is broken. I dont even use the console. I found a piece of plastic in the back floor and looked for where it came from and found that damn hinge just broke apart. Has anyone else had this problem? I called the dodge dealer and that dumb a** parts man said I cant find it on the computor can you bring it by and let us look at it? Damn I laive 50 miles from them. . owell if anyone knows how much this cost and what is the part number. I believe only the top part that screws to the lid is broken... amn every day I believe more and more of what people say about my truck. "the motor will out last the damn truck" I hope the truck will at least last 10 years. My 454 suburban lasted 20 years. .

I removed my 'console' and installed a real one from a van. Now I have someplace to store things.

Do you have the gray cloth interior?

It's sitting in the closet if you want to make an offer.

96 3500 5 speed on third throttle cable, replaced both trim strips on the window/door edge due to rusting, and several others.

Looking to upgrade the front end but mines a 2WD and haven't found any upgrade parts other than sway bar bushings. How about you?

Tell that lazy a$$ parts guy to walk out on the lot and look at one - how can looking at yours do him any better?!?! #ad
Oh well, probably just another DC genius.

I am unimpressed with the console, don't like the way it's partitioned and how they have the little dips in the edge so little items fall out of the partitions when you raise it.

The one on my '01 is flimsy compared to the '98. 5 I had, this one you have to give the lid a little slam when you shut it, or it'll fly open in the upright position. More than once I've had to retrieve the contents from the floor of the back seat #ad
It is also difficult to open. I need to fiddle with it to make it work better.

Redram, how hard was it to install yours out of a van? Could you give more details (what kind of van, did it match the interior, etc. )

I found 2 little pieces of plastic when I was looking in my console the other day. I looked around and discovered they were 2 of the 4 tabs that hold the lid in the open position. I touched one of the remaining 2 and it just fell off! Only one left, and it's cracked too. The dealer has a new lid ordered.
I'm not too impressed with the lid, either. It creaks loudly when you lock it back in the open position - that is, it used to - before the tabs broke off. I also think it opens and closes too hard. The latch needs tweaking. I guess for only #ad
$30k you can't expect everything to work like it should. #ad

The van console was easy to install. Bought a Ford van in gray that matches the gray of the 96 very close.
To install, I removed the front seat assembly. This is 8 bolts (4 per seat). The center seat is riveted to the inside seat brackets of the driver's adn passenger seats. I used a drill and grinder to remove the heads of the rivets and then punched them out. This then gives you a separate seat for the driver and passenger. I then reinstalled the seats. The van console is just screw to the floor transmission tunnel with in four places. Contour of the bottom is close enough that the carpetting covers up any difference.

The console has two drink holders up front which I now use rather that the 'bouncy' ones over the radio. I installed the CD Changer in the console to hide it out of view when I added the aftermarket radio(replacing the stock one the worked only so-so).

Seat belts for the center seat wer also removed. The passenger and driver's seat belts are attached to teh seat brackets so removing the center seat does not effect them at all.

Only thing missing are inside armrests for the main seats like you'd have on true captains chairs.

With the 5-speed, anyone seating in the center seat had to be a close personal friend anyways when you go for reverse!!

Hope the DC offers a captains chair / console option when they decide to offer 4 real doors and a full back seat!!!

Three of the plastic clips are broke on mine. The first on broke about a week after I bought it. What next? May have to go to the dealer to see what they can do.

Stock so far but considering bedliner and louvered gate... then?

What I hate about that center console is you have to have a 20" chest size for the darn thing to clear your arm and shoulders to open. I have to lean out the door and window to make room for it. Makes no sense at all. Opening the center console while going down the road isn't very safe since you have to move your whole body to make room for it -- unless you're five years old, then seeing over the steering wheel must be a serious problem.

I really like my truck interior except for the ridiculous 'ergonomic' (my a!!) center console and the totally out of reach cup holders in the 98. 5 and up manual.

(wha, wha, ... )

Don't you know they make it that big to hold your laptop? #ad
I wonder how many can afford a laptop after forking over the cash (or, as in my case, making the payments) for the truck. #ad

The size isn't the problem- it's the way the lid is hinged. It's awkward to open and, on mine @ least, I have to hold it open with my right elbow. IMHO it would have been much more ergonomic ($0. 50 please) to have hinged it on the passenger's side.

Mark why would you need to open the console"while going down road"?

Mule, to get 'stuff'. You name it: maps, notes, CDs, whatever. I don't have to get in it while driving very often; but when I do it gets a good cursing.

I had to pay $178 for a new lid. Mine was cracked from me using it as a prop.
