Billl's got the right idea... and I'm referring to the hinge for the console being on the passenger side instead of the rear... . although the smokes, casettes and gun sound good too! #ad

Bill's idea is better than DC current design, but still too limiting. I saw a kids toy (a "magic" box of some sort)a while back (I wish I could remember where), that had snap hinges on all 4 sides and a latch on all 4 sides. The latch was set to open all hinges except the one on the opposite side.

If you want to open it the way it is now, hit the front latch. If you want to open it toward the passenger hit the side latch.

I realize the engineers designing kids toys are much more dedicated to form and function than the DC designers, but it should be possible..... or at least get decent cupholders

Stock so far but considering bedliner and louvered gate... then?

2 of the 4 hinge tabs on my new console are cracked, so it won't be long before it's replaced again. Last night I noticed the cheap plastic trim on the inside of the lid is coming apart too. It's kind of comical but really pretty pathetic.

I have a 95 truck and the console lid has been replaced 3 times and the bottom twice. I still have to slam it to get it to latch. I have played around with the adjustment on the strike pin which helped a little.

I think half the problem is that the lid and bottom only come from the factory as two separate items, which them have to be pieced together at the dealership. I believe this is where most of the problem is, seems like things just don't line up propery. by the time the hinge rod is inserted seems like some tabs get broke in the process. The mechanic said that in order to get the rod in he has to do a little prying on the plastic tabs. I have noticed that some of the tabs that get broke on mine are the kind that snap and lock in place, well after being pryed on to get the rod in, the little hook part on the tab gets broke and the tab won't lock back in place.

After 3 different attempts, weeks of waiting for the parts to come in and my 3yr/36k warranty expiring I just gave up on the whole thing. I think that if the counsel lid and bottom came as one whole unit from the factory maybe things would line up better so the thing would latch properly. Of coarse if they used something better than plastic for the hinge assembly maybe this problem would be fixed

As far as the hinge creak, I found that spraying some silicone on the hinge assemble helps stop it for awhile.

Try a cup smoothie from Geno's. Way better than reaching down on the floor for a drink. It also has a small cubby for stuff you need so you don't have to open the console while driving.

The Console is a wonderful thing, only takes 4 bolts to remove it and then the cat can sleep on it in the back bedroom and the wife can hide her purse in it. Now you have room for your custom Radio mounting either Ham or CB, you can drop in a coleman ice chest and you have a big space to reach back and break up the back seat fights between the kids. I just love my console. However the kids are not so keen on the concept.

I'm quite sure the people that designed our trucks have never driven one. The console and the drink holders are prime examples. I sprung for the DC $800 CD player upgrade. Now you would think that if the truck doesn't have a cassett deck but has a CD player you would get a console designed to hold CD's rather than just giving everyone the console with little cassett slots. I guess you would have to have more than half a brain to think that far ahead!

Anyone have ideas on what to keep it the cassett slots?
