Wouldn't you know it. I was changeing my oil today trying to keep my truck in good condition when I touch the alternator with the oil wrench and it sparked. No problem but now the DAMN GEN light is on and the alternator is not charging. I check all the fuses and even the wires on the back of the alternator and everything is ok. Did I blow a diode? I think i may but now it back to the dealer to get a alternator put on under warrenty I hope. I have a 50 dollar deductable so I have to eat the fact that a oil change cost me a lot of money. Be careful when you change your oil!!!! Has any one else had this happen or is it just my damn luck? If anyone knows what else could be wrong please let me know.

Theres a big fuse in the fuse box under the hood. This has happened to many others. I think the only place you can buy a replacement is the dealer. I put some rtv on the alternator output wire on mine to prevent this.

Hyper, Good luck with your alternator. Remember, you really don't need to use a filter wrench. If you do it was probably too tight to begin with. When I take my filter off I use rubber kitchen gloves for extra grip. I have never needed the wrench.

Check the 140 amp fuse up near the engine end of the power distribution center under the hood. Its secured with two cap screws. This is probably blown.

Pick up a new one and a spare for the tool box at the dealer. They're about $5. 00 or so.

When I did that, I couldn't find a fuse , either. I went to the parts store and got something like a 100 amp one, bent the contacts to 90's, reamed the holes, and used that till I could get the one from the dealer. Worked just fine

I would be careful just putting it on hand tight. There has been many come loose from the vibration of our motors. I use a wrench and just do it a little over hand tight.

Hyper;
I blew one of the 30 amp fuses in the power dist. center and when I looked and all fuses "looked" good. When I got desperate and talked to a tech at the dealer, he told me that sometimes a fuse can be blown and it will not really show on visual inspection. , He suggested checking with an ohm meter. When I did I found a fuse that looked good but was in fact blown.

Off subject a little bit, but you are asking for trouble if you hand tighten one of these filters on a Cummins diesel. Tighten it with a wrench relatively tight, or else your driveway may never be the same again... ... ... ...

Just my . 02, I haven't changed the oil yet on my ETH. But I've installed oil filters on a B cummins in my FL70, on the 7. 3 in my previous pickup, and on the Detroit in my big truck (not to mention numerous car and bike motors) hand tight with never a problem. Now, by hand tight, I mean putting some effort into it, not just snugging 'em down. But I've never had a filter come off.

Regarding the tightening procedure of the oil filter: after filling the filter with oil and lubricating the seal with same, thread on filter until contact with the filter mount has been made, plus 3/4 of a turn. I also use rubber gloves to hand tighten the filter the appropriate amount. Be very careful if using a Fleetguard filter, IF you use the red Fleetguard insignia as a basis for reference of the 3/4 turn as there are two of these on the filter case, 180 degrees apart from one another (although one appears right side up, the other one upside down). You could inadvertently leave the filter "loose" if you are not paying attention! I have never had a filter loosen that has been tightened in this manor (I have reference marks on the filter mount and the filter).

I apprieciate peoples concern for thinking I'm not tightening my filter enough but I've changed my oil 16 times now and the filter never even weeps oil. It says turn it 3/4 turn past contact and that's what I do. No wrench necessary. Good luck to all.

Hyper, Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. Luckily it was only the 140 amp fuse under the hood at the main fuse box. I had to go to the dodge dealer to get a replacement, and yes I did buy a spare. I am glad these trucks have two batteries. I am not impressed with the poor design and no rubber boot over the hot lead to the altenator.

Hyper - Sorry to hear ya blow a fuse. The others have pointed you location so check it out.
The only time an filter wrench was used was on the 1st change and I made sure it had a rubber coated handle. Baldwin filter are labled contact base plus 1 turn - Never a problem with hand tight filters coming loose.

SSSparked mmmy alternator a fffew tttimes ww. . www.. . wwwwith nnno ill aaaaffects. Then I stumbled on a plastic-handled tool (at Harbor Freight Tools) with a rubber strap used for removing tight lids etc... Works real well with Cummins oil ffffilters too. Red plastic handle with a black rubber strap about 12" long. You thread the strap around the filter and lock it back into the handle and voila!!! Off she comes! No ssssparks and no fffffuss! Works in both directions #ad

It is a good practice to check fuses NOT on the Ohm scale, but on the DCv scale. A blown fuse may show as a resistance, which means you still have a bit of continuity, or it may show ok on the ohm scale, but not be able to carry full voltage. If you look at most of the plug in type fuses, you will see that there are two spots of metal exposed on each side. Measure voltage to ground (while installed)on BOTH, if they are equal, the fuse is good. If not, replace it no matter how it looks.

Just my two cents, having been made to look the fool in the past by using the ohm scale to check a simple fuse with a solid cover. Had I used the DCv scale, I would have found the problem imeediately.

for those of us using a big hoseclamp and a bungee cord on the filter-can to prevent rotating off, watch that blasted little alternator screw!! I shorted the loose end of the clamp and branded my hand with a neat little curved line. . #ad
. (if it makes me feel any better, I can be happy that the thin metal had enough resistance to heat red without blowing that fuse y'all'r mentioning... no ill effects, except for pain an burnt flesh smell #ad
