I have a friends OTR truck at my dad's shop to repair and paint the hood. well i pulled the hood and parked the truck outside the shop for the last few weeks.

tonight i went to pull the truck around and re-install the hood. some no-good low-down roten ... . stole the intercooler, piping from turbo and to intake and the A/C condensor. about $1600 in parts.

Now I would be willing to bet my first born it was one of these junk men that come around daily to gather the car parts to scarp out for money. they took every nut and bolt they took off and just hacked through the boots with a knife.

the truck was parked out by the corner of the building where the scrap metal is kept until someone hauls it off. I can garantee you they looked over at that big 4ftx4ft aluminum condensor and air to air and said "looky there, I can just come back tonight and steal that and probably get $40 bucks for it"

I dont know why these guys are not required to be licensed and report to the secretary of state where they gather car parts from and catalog vin numbers etc. , along with the recyclers that accept these parts from these guys.

I stood and watched a guy one night (he didnt know i was there) at the abandoned building next door. He pulled some metal flashing off the curb, went over and shook the old drive-up microphone to see how hard it would be to pull out of the ground and did the same thing to the street lamp before i stepped out and told him to leave. These damn gypsies will take anything that isnt bolted down. well in this case they stole something that was.

Now, I cant ask my dad to turn it in to his business insurance, I was the one doing the work, just using his shop. So i now have to eat the paint job costs plus pick up the remainder of whatever these parts are going to cost to get this thing on the road again. the stinkin intercooler is nearly $600 alone.

they better hope I never find out who took it. Plus I told dad to run every one of those guys off from now on and tell them why and to spread the good word. I take the crap and get rid of it and buy lunch for the shop gang with the money.

With the price of scrap so high, that's becomming more common. A guy I know had an evaporator, radiator and some other front end crash parts stolen from a Range Rover he was repairing. He checked all the scrap places out but no luck.

Todd, Sorry about your misfortune! Can you tell us what kind of rig you are working on and maybe the TDR land can help you find the parts you need reasonable priced. I know of a few local guys that have some later model rigs sitting around for parts and I would be happy to use my wild cards that are owed me to help a fellow TDR member out if I can.

Sure its a 94 western star with a detroit 60. I dont have the VIN with me but will get it tonight. what sucks is the guy who owns it has retired and moved back to England. his son and I were to drive it to the consignment lot this weekend for him to sell.

I'm visiting the four scrap buyers in the area today to look at what they have in hopes of finding the stuff laying on their pile and to let them know these parts are out there.

I had the same thing happen to my truck at the shop where I was working on my truck. I'm pretty sure which scrap guys did it. They haven't been back since. If they come back before I head to my new job, believe me... I will be scaring the word of GOD into them!

Radiator Condensor and Intercooler stolen here...

JP

you know I visited 6 of the buyers today and they all had the same story; poor is me, i have to give back stolen stuff to the cops all the time.

well if they would adopt the policy of requiring a valid drivers license number before they pay a person it would probably stop half the crimes.

the normal average Joe that has nothing to hide would reach for thier wallet and cough up a DL to turn in the scrap. any of this crap where "i dont have it" or "all i have is a ticket" etc. Just send them packing down the road. When they figure out they cant get rid of stolen stuff they will quit stealing it.

one place told me they probably know who did it but cant prove it becase of the time frames envolved. I'd like five minutes with that crack head in a dark alley. 2. 5mins to beat the life out of him and 2. 5mins to savor the moment.

The parts list is $1523. 84 all to come from my left rear pocket.

That sucks Todd! If you havent purchased the parts yet, hopefully a TDR member can hook ya up with a better deal!

As far as the drives lic. at scrap yards, I swear here in MN when I have brought in scrap, hell even tires, I have to show them a valid Drivers lic. and they take down make/model/plate of the vehicle.

I feel for ya Josh. I found the parts used at Four States in Joplin, MO. The IC was $450 and the condenser was $125. So at least i can get the thing back together for under a grand. I was only charging $600 for the entire job so I'll be in the hole on it before it's done.

Oh well, lesson learned and life goes on right?

Yes, Rick I visited all 6 of them yeasterday.

This whole scrap/recycling industry has provoked a large crime spree in alot of areas. air conditioners stolen from bowling alleys, gutters stolen from schools, wire stolen from jobsites are all too common according to what I learned yesterday. My blood boils every time I think of this. If their businesses weren't around this thief wouldnt have cost me $1000 dollars and taken money away from my family.

My advice is these guys better start policing themselves of someone will do it for them and that will be bad for everyone envolved.

Someone will eventually give them some lead pellets with copper jackets to go recycle.

I hate thieves

I was working on an excavator on a job site yesterday, saw 2 different people stop, climb over the plastic snowfence and look in the scrap dumpster!

aluminum scrap is worth good coin now... pop went to the scrap yard with painted aluminum scrap [old siding etc... ] and it was over $0. 80/cdn a pound. i would have liked that value when i went there last. . i had near 1,000lbs and the price at the time was just under $0. 50/cdn a pound
