A lady physician friend/colleague (psychiatrist) is currently on the road. I-80 headed to Cheyenne, WY from Lincoln, NE. She dropped me an "urgent" message this AM stating, "there's something wrong with my car, what should I do?" Guess she thinks I live in WY because my sig says "Somewhere west of Laramie. " (This is gonna be my bad, ya know  )

As it turns out, she has a Jeep (hey, at least it's a DC product) and it was making a loud "clunk" when turning. Took it to a Dodge/Jeep dealer in Lincoln who looked at it. "Guy said that he thinks the problem is the axle (or the joint?), the grease has leaked out and it might need replacing. " Sounds like a front axle U-joint, no?

Apparently she has had some less than happy experiences with dealers and fears getting ripped off. Dealer told her it was ok to drive so she headed out for Cheyenne this AM. On her way to Oregon.

Anybody have any suggestions regarding somewhere along her route where she might get an honest diagnosis and fair repair?

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

If it is a warranty issue and she is going to be anywhere near Idaho Falls, ID. I have always had good luck with Ron Sayer Dodge. They have always treated me fair. If it is non warranty, I know a mechanic that will treat her very well.

Thanks MR, I'll relay that info. I believe it's out of warrantee.

Anybody have a guess as to whether or not she'll make it to Oregon with a clunking U-joint?

If it is just a U-joint I would be more than happy to change it for her. As for making it to Oregon or not, hard to say. If I can help just let me know.
