what is the limited slip mechanism in the Dana 70. clutches, cup & cone, or mechanical lock up? A neighbor who builds hot rods for a living told me that if

it is a clutch type LSD then I should not use synthetic gear oil as it is "too slippery" and will prevent the clutches from doing their job properly.

I use Royal Purple 75W-145. It comes with the LSD additive.

this sounds like an urban legend to me.

the owners manual (cheesy as it is) recommends synthetic 75W-145.

It is a clutch style. My experience with them is if it is already broke in with regular oil and LS additive then you can switch to syn. but I have never gotten them to wear in after a reclutch with syn oil they always chatter. So I run regular oil for a few thousand miles to get the additive into the discs then switch to syn.

The clutch-type limited-slip differentials typically need a friction modifier additive to work properly. It's not an urban legend. What I don't know is... if you switch to something w/o the friction modifer and then experience chattering, will the clutch faces be damaged so that if you went back to using friction modifier, would it cure the chatter?

I haven't fooled around... I am using the Mopar stuff... for the time being.
